The Golden State Warriors were reportedly supposed to have made a decision with Steve Kerr on his future as head coach this week. After they met last Monday and were reported to be continuing discussions this week, the expectation was that an official decision would be this week, one way or another.
Alas, as the weekend approaches, as does the NBA draft lottery on Sunday, there still isn't anything set in stone. Reports continue to fly left and right, though, and despite a lack of communication from both the Warriors and Kerr himself, the latest reports suggest things are trending in the right direction for a reunion, at least for a couple more years.
Kerr Reportedly Expected To Return As Warriors Head Coach
Brett Siegel, an NBA insider for ClutchPoints, has been one of the main reporters putting out new information on the situation over the past few weeks, and he came through once again on Thursday. He talked about his latest reporting alongside fellow reporter Tomer Azarly on the Clutch Scoops podcast.
"Right now, everything kind of stands on the direction of Steve Kerr being back with the Warriors. That's the internal feel from people I've talked with in the organization and the players alike. They feel like Steve Kerr will be back as the head coach. He's expressed in these meetings behind closed doors to the Warriors' brass that he wants to continue coaching, and they've reciprocated that they want him to be their head coach. It's now about finding middle ground on these philosophical changes about potential roster changes in the offseason and just talking through what the next two to three years are going to look like."
Siegel elaborated on the particular differences that need to be hashed out between Kerr and the front office, noting how it'd affect some of the players, as well.
"Joe Lacob and Mike Dunleavy, they don't envision this being a Last Dance scenario where everybody is going to be holding hands going out together after the '26-'27 season. Joe Lacob wants to contend for championships now, and he wants to do so for many years to come, with and without Steph Curry. He wants to set his organization up for the next decade to be successful. So with Steve Kerr, that's where these discussions lie. How long does he want to be the head coach of the Warriors? How long will they continue pushing forward with what they have? What does this mean for Draymond Green's future with his player option? What does this mean with a possible extension for Steph Curry? Does he want just one year? Does he want two years? How long does he envision himself playing? All those topics factor into the conversation that Steve Kerr and the Warriors' brass are having now."
It's a lot of things to consider for both sides, but with the hard part seemingly out of the way and both sides on the same page of a Kerr return, it seems like it's only a matter of time before everything is settled.
Siegel also reported that the Warriors had wanted this done before the draft lottery on Sunday afternoon, where the Warriors will find out whether they stay at pick 11 or they get lucky with their 9.4% chance to jump into the top 4. There is still one more day this can happen, and it would be good to be able to jump right into the pre-draft process with a head coach in place.
