The Warriors are losing faith.

The Golden State Warriors have persisted in the pursuit of LeBron James since it was first revealed that the 22 time All-Star would be parting ways with the Los Angeles Lakers and entering free agency, but their position in the sweepstakes has been in doubt since almost the beginning.

While there are compelling reasons to think of James going to the Warriors, namely the narrative potential of James potentially ending his career with the team that he so often went to war with in the NBA Finals during the 2010s and joining forces with Steph Curry, his longtime rival turned friend and one of the other most iconic players of their shared generation, there have also been a lot of factors working against the Warriors.

When they initially entered the running for James, one big condition that he was requesting of them was that they would need to trade for Anthony Davis from the Washington Wizards to reunite James with his former Lakers teammate, but that plan has seemingly been squashed by the Wizards' desire to keep Davis longterm.

Factors Working Against Warriors

Without the possibility of bringing in Davis, the state of the Warriors' roster doesn't present as an ideal place for James to land. Since winning a championship in 2022, the Warriors have been on a steady decline and were eliminated in the Play-In tournament this past season, their first time missing the true playoffs since 2021.

Without that pedigree of success that defined the Warriors for so long, they had little concrete reasons that could appeal to James in a strictly basketball sense and as the offseason progressed even further, the Warriors' chances looked slimmer and slimmer.

When a report from ESPN's Shams Charania stated that James' shortlist of teams was down to three: the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers, the Warriors seemingly counting out of the running.

Still, the Warriors weren't fully counted out of the conversation in the broader speculation about James eventual destination, nor did it seem like the team counted itself out either with Curry, Draymond Green and even incoming rookie Yaxel Lendeborg all making public and private pitches to James to lure him to the Bay.

Waning Belief

But the latest report from The Athletic's Anthoiny Slater seems to finally show that that Warriors are losing belief in their chances to bring James to the Bay.

"Warriors are pessimistic," Slater said (via Clutch Points). "I talked to somebody last night that basically said they've been given no sign or hint that it's gonna happen... They believe it is not leaning towards them."

As unlikely as it seemed at times, the Warriors were putting their all into trying to land James and the idea of missing out on him is an issue for the Warriors in a broader sense, as it would mean that they firmly missed out on signing any major superstar this offseason, something that was a major priority for the team when offseason began.

But if the Warriors truly believe that they are out on James as Slater reported, then now may be the time to make peace with missing out on the future Hall of Famer and pivoting towards other, smaller deals that could address the needs that the Warriors still have ahead of next season.
