The Golden State Warriors are facing one of the more important games remaining in the regular season. The Los Angeles Lakers are just 3.5 games ahead of the Warriors for 6th in the Western Conference, but that gap can close tonight as the Warriors host the Lakers at Chase Center at 5:30pm PST.
The Warriors are looking to maintain their momentum from a dominant victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, where they displayed an extremely strong team performance, while the Lakers are trying to snap a three-game losing streak that includes a loss to the Celtics and two straight heartbreakers against the Magic and Suns.
The Warriors played with just nine healthy players on Wednesday against the Grizzlies, and while it ultimately worked out for that game, it's definitely not the ideal scenario.
Thankfully, the Warriors' injury report for this game revealed that the two days off may allow a couple of players to return to action.
Draymond Green is listed as probable to play. In the Warriors' last three games, he missed the Nuggets and Grizzlies game, while playing in the Pelicans games due to low back injury management. Coincidentally, the Warriors only lost the Pelicans game with Green playing, but there's no doubt that Green still has value, especially when considering he'll likely be needed to guard LeBron James on the defensive end today.
The other player that might be able to return to the court is Kristaps Porzingis. The newest Warrior is listed as questionable to play due to the illness that has kept him out of the last three games. Porzingis had just finally gotten over his Achilles tendinitis that was hampering him for much of the season, and since he had arrived from Atlanta, but an unknown illness has taken him out of commission for the past few days. However, it looks like he may be close to getting over the illness and would be a great addition to play against the Lakers.
The rest of the injury report is filled with the expected absences: Steph Curry, Seth Curry, Jimmy Butler, and LJ Cryer, who have all been out and are expected to continue being out until further notice.
The Lakers, on the other hand, are operating nearly at full strength right now, despite what the three-game losing streak may imply.
Their Big Three, Luka Doncic, James, and Austin Reaves, are playing just their 15th game together this season due to a myriad of injuries that all three have suffered throughout the season. In fact, they've played just 238 minutes on the court together, nowhere near the most-played 3-man combination for any of them.
Regardless, this is one of the best trios in the league due to how potent their offensive talent is. Doncic is also celebrating his 27th birthday, so the Warriors may have to contend with a birthday power-up.
The Lakers will, however, be missing one of their usual starters in Rui Hachimura. The forward missed their last game on Thursday against the Suns and is once again doubtful to play today due to an illness.
His absence means Marcus Smart will likely slide into the starting role once more, especially considering that he matches the Lakers in size and speed with the smaller lineup that the Warriors often employ.
It'll have to be a hard-fought matchup against a team dying for a win, but the Warriors will just need to channel the excellent team play that they exhibited to beat the Nuggets and the Grizzlies.
