As of Saturday evening, the Golden State Warriors got their guy back. Steve Kerr agreed to a new two-year contract to return as head coach of the Warriors, remaining the highest-paid coach in the NBA and reuniting with the team he's been with for all 12 years of his coaching career.
Kerr's return has major implications on how the roster will look moving forward, as, at a minimum, his presence signals a remainder of the old Warriors' dynasty and an indication of continued attempts at playoff and championship contention.
Notably, that means Kerr's two most tenured players, Steph Curry and Draymond Green, can have a much different outlook on the coming season, and with Green evaluating his $27 million player option this summer, it might make all the difference.
Warriors Not Expected To Shop Green In Trade Talks
Green's future in Golden State currently lies in his hands with the player option, but if he were to opt in, then it'd create a scenario where the power then goes to the Warriors' front office.
The Dubs are reportedly going to be in the market for a star this offseason, and with their hellish salary cap situation, any trade would require the requisite matching salaries.
Jimmy Butler is often the primary player for these star trades thanks to his much larger contract, but $27 million on Green's expiring contract could also be extremely valuable for a more mid-level trade, or if the trade would acquire multiple players.
However, Slater reported on Saturday that this may not be a major consideration for the Warriors in the first place.
"Team sources have indicated that they have no intention to shop Green or push him out. On the court, they still view him as an additive winner with an elite defensive skill set that plays up when the stakes rise. Off the court, the organization felt he had a positive season as a leader while his acumen and voice essentially make him another assistant coach."
Of course, things can change at the drop of a hat in the NBA, but this positive reinforcement should be a boost to Green's chances of returning in some fashion.
Green's Contract Options May Shift Depending On Market
With Green's $27 million player option, he does have two options, even if the goal is to return to the Warriors either way.
Obviously, Green can simply accept the option. That would turn his contract into an expiring $27 million deal, and though that's enticing for trades, it also aligns Green with Curry and many of the other Warriors for them to all hit free agency next summer.
The other option that would require a bit of sacrifice from Green is to decline the option and sign a restructured contract. In this scenario, the new contract would likely have a much lower salary, especially in the first year, but likely be more than one year.
Slater discussed this potential outcome and added a caveat that it may depend on what the rest of the free agency market looks like.
"The Warriors' willingness to do a decline-and-extend type scenario with Draymond would depend on how much immediate benefit they would get from lowering that first-year salary number. If they believe going from $27 million to whatever it would be, $18 million, $19 million, $20 million, in that first year would help them go get a guy for a mid-level, then that's a conversation they would be willing to have."
The mid-level exception could be valuable to sign a quality role player, so freeing it up even more with a restructured contract could be of importance if the front office finds available players they want to bring in.
Right now, the ball is in Green's court, but he can dictate if he wants to hand it back to the Warriors and allow them to take the wheel for the good of the franchise, one way or another.
