The Washington Wizards still have roster spots to fill with training camp potentially a chance for general manager Will Dawkins and the front office to evaluate the roster ahead of preseason. Yet one roster move feels all too obvious now.
News surfaced earlier this week that the Capital City Go-Go, the Wizards G League affiliate, acquired the rights to sign former NBA guard Reece Beekman in a four team trade that shipped Kadary Richmond to the Cleveland Charge, the Cavaliers' affiliate, along with former Wizards guard Malaki Branham sent to the Osceola Magic. The move doesn't mean that he's now set to join the Wizards given the Go-Go now own his signing rights, potentially opening the door for Beekman to re-join the Wizards for training camp among others. Yet with how the summer has played out between Summer League, free agency and the Wizards' reconstruction efforts, a reunion feels all too obvious now.
The absence of Jamir Watkins has helped make the case for Beekman's arrival on the Wizards' roster in 2026-27, and following the acquisition of Tre Mann and departure of Julian Reese that opened a two way spot, the path to getting a shot with the Wizards feels all too obvious.
The chance for Beekman to fill the vacant two way spot alongside Felix Okpara and Jamir Watkins now looms large, yet with Watkins sidelined for the bulk of the season, Beekman as a two way candidate offers value to fill that role with a guard already owning NBA experience. After averaging 2.7 points and 1.8 assists in nearly 14 minutes per game with the Brooklyn Nets in 2024-25, Beekman was a standout for the Wizards in Summer League after averaging 7.8 points and six assists including three games with multiple steals. That's where Beekman offers value, especially with renewed offseason commitment to defense and absence of Watkins. Bilal Coulibaly returns as the team's undoubted best defender, but adding a second plus defender to the backcourt could loom large. With the roster flexibility to now do so, Beekman filling the final two way spot may now trend as the best fit for the front office to fill one of the two spots.
How the final standard roster spot is filled remains a question mark with the dwindling market as quiet as it has been all offseason, but the chance for Beekman to add value to the Wizards' roster is evident. The arrival of Mann adds to the on-ball rotation, but Beekman can add to the defensive upgrades that round out the new-look coaching staff and roster.
