United by a championship run and an $8 million move, the Miami Hurricanes' new quarterback finds comfort in the South Beach transition from Duke alongside his favorite thousand-yard target.

Darian Mensah Explains What Duke Transfer Cooper Barkate Means to HimMore Videos

Duke won the ACC championship last season despite having five losses, thanks to some bizarre tiebreakers.

Then the Blue Devils were plundered.

By Miami.

The Hurricanes are expected to be the best team in the ACC this season after making the national championship in 2025. Miami has benefited from having star quarterbacks under center the last two seasons, in Cam Ward and Carson Beck.

Miami needed another star quarterback to make a run for the College Football Playoff this season and added Darian Mensah in the transfer portal, despite the fact that the quarterback signed a two-year contract with Duke worth $8 million.

In addition to Mensah, Duke wide receiver Cooper Barkate transferred to Miami, further putting Blue Devils head coach Manny Diaz in the hole for his offense in 2026.

Barkate, who transferred to Duke from Harvard before the 2025 season, recorded 72 receptions for 1,106 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

During the ACC Kickoff media days in Charlotte on Wednesday, Mensah told reporters that having Barkate was huge because of the difficulty in transitioning to Miami this offseason. He called Barkate his "best friend."

"It's great to go through some transition that's a little bit difficult withyour best friend," Mensah said, via Brett McMurphy of On3. "We're like 2 peas in a pod. We just go and get it, do a lot of things off the field. I think that translates to our chemistry on the field."

That's crucial chemistry that the Blue Devils will lack on offense for the upcoming season. Mensah and Barkate developed that chemistry in one offseason at Duke, and grew closer as the team made a run to the ACC championship.

It only stands to reason those two would have been even better for Duke in 2026.

Instead, Mensah and Barkate will be on the side of the field on Nov. 14.

Duke will hope San Jose State transfer Walker Eget can find a receiver to develop a similar relationship with in training camp. The Blue Devils can't replace Mensah and Barkate, but they can still have a good season and make a bowl game.
