The Florida Gators and newly-hired head coach Jon Sumrall have been on a phenomenal run within the 2027 recruiting class this offseason.

Since his arrival to the program back in December, the former Tulane Green Waves head coach has made waves on the recruiting trail by landing a total of 23 commits in the upcoming recruiting cycle. This incredible feat from Sumrall and his coaching staff has landed the Gators within the top-four programs in the 2027 recruiting rankings.

But unfortunately for the red-hot SEC school, Florida could miss out on another key prospect in the 2027 class this month.

According to Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett on Tuesday morning, 2027 four-star wide receiver Amare Patterson has canceled his official visit with the Gators and replaced it with a trip to South Carolina.

Patterson, as one of the top pass catchers in the upcoming recruiting cycle, continues to rise in the ranks throughout his time at the high school level. Currently, the highly-touted playmaker is the No. 4-ranked prospect in the state of South Carolina, as well as the No. 33-ranked wide receiver in the 2027 class, per 247Sports’ Composite.

Prior to Sumrall taking over as head coach of the Gators, Patterson was one of the top targets for Florida under former head coach Billy Napier, receiving an offer from the program in April of 2025. In addition to landing an offer from Napier and the previous coaching staff, Patterson also took an unofficial visit to Gainesville in September and attended the program’s Junior Day back in January of this year.

However, instead of taking his official visit to Florida this month, Patterson will now visit the Gamecocks on Jun 12. To make matters worse, the stout receiver is also set to announce his commitment later this month on Jun 20, which puts Sumrall and his coaching staff in a bind leading up to the highly anticipated day.

Luckily for Gators’ fans, Sumrall’s incredible efforts within the 2027 recruiting class have already landed the program a total of three wide receiver commits in the upcoming cycle. This includes a trio of four-star pass catchers, such as Elias Pearl, Tramond Collins, and Anthony Jennings.

Both Pearl and Collins are consensus top-20 receivers in the 2027 class, while Jennings is viewed as a top-25 prospect in the state of Florida.
