Head coach Jon Sumrall introduces a quarterback "or" designation, pitting Aaron Philo against Tramell Jones Jr.
For Florida Gators fans who have been following along with the depth charts this season, it was easy to point out a change made at quarterback.
It's not like Jon Sumrall has outright named Tramell Jones Jr. the starter over Aaron Philo, but after Philo's two interceptions against Georgia, no one would fault him for doing so.
That said, Philo is still, technically, listed as the QB1 as his name is above the sophomores. When looking at the depth chart, though, there's a bold "or" listed next to Philo and Jones Jr.
So, just a few days before a huge SEC showdown against John Mateer and Oklahoma, Florida is telling the Sooners it will either be Philo OR Jones who starts.
This is the latest situation of Sumrall not committing to a QB1 during the week, but it'll be interesting to see if anything changes the day prior to the game, like it did against the Bulldogs.
Does Philo deserve another chance?
Neither quarterback was perfect in Atlanta, far from it, but one could argue Philo's performance to start the game doomed Florida from the start.
The 6-foot-1 junior came over from Georgia Tech in the offseason and has had his moments, no doubt, but the lows have also been very clear.
Philo dealt with an injury that kept him out of the Texas game, and that's where Jones Jr. proved he's capable of leading this team to success.
Jones failed to do so in Atlanta, but his performance was far better than Philo's, and he had a lot of ground to make up once he got into that game.
With a sub-par Oklahoma team up next, Sumrall knows that another slow start could be a death sentence to this program, and that's why he has to make sure whoever he has start the game can protect the football and let running back Jadan Baugh do his thing.
Jones will likely start this game
There's no concrete evidence that Philo is indeed going to be benched for the Oklahoma game, but with how he played against the Bulldogs, there's simply no need to throw him out there in Week 10.
The Sooners don't have the best defense in the world, far from it, but Jones has bee the far more consistent option.
This is a case of "what have you done for me lately," and Jones fits the bill compared to Philo who simply hasn't been able to recapture the magic from earlier this season.
