Following a humbling rivalry blowout, Jon Sumrall questions his team’s emotional resilience as the Gators fight to salvage their playoff ambitions and secure a milestone nine-win season.
The Florida Gators have been a roller coaster team this season, and they're at a low point after losing 27-8 to rival Georgia on Saturday in Atlanta.
The Gators entered the contest with a No. 17 ranking and 5-2 record. After upsetting Ole Miss and Texas earlier in the season, Florida had an opportunity to stay in the College Football Playoff race with a win or at least a close game against the Bulldogs.
Instead, Florida's big loss on the national stage to its rival was humbling for the Gators, who have now have three blowout losses on their resume.
Florida first-year head coach Jon Sumrall is hoping to rally the troops for the final month of the regular season.
During his news conference this week, Sumrall admitted he was concerned about how much "gas" the team had in the tank after being decimated by Georgia on national television. He's worried that his players might not have it emotionally to rebound after being let down.
Instead of pointing fingers, Sumrall made a pitch to take ownership of the loss and turn the page for the rest of the season. The Gators can still finish with a 9-3 record if they win out, which hasn't been done since 2020.
Sumrall is still frustrated by the fact that the Gators are ready to compete for a championship, which is his ultimate goal. He believes the program will eventually get there.
Winning out won't be easy for the Gators. They'll host a 4-4 Oklahoma team this week that fired its offensive coordinator amid issues with that side of the ball. The Sooners were blown out at home by South Carolina on Saturday, something Sumrall's team knows all too well.
Then Florida will travel to play No. 8 Kentucky on Nov. 14. The Wildcats have been the surprise of the SEC this season, and it won't be easy for the Gators to beat a UK team that is competing for a spot in the CFP.
Florida will host 3-5 Vanderbilt on Nov. 21, a very winnable game for the Gators.
UF's final contest of the regular season will come on the road against Florida State. The Noles are looking for a new head coach after firing Mike Norvell this week. It's still a rivalry game, but Florida will be heavily favored in that contest.
Winning three out of four of those contests would give Florida an eight-win season, which would show significant progress under Sumrall.
