Jon Sumrall’s recruiting tear continues as elite Alabama pass rusher Marquis Evans prepares to choose between Florida and three rival powerhouses in a massive Wednesday announcement.
The Florida Gators, thanks to an incredible effort from newly hired head coach Jon Sumrall, have quickly become one of the top programs within the 2027 recruiting class.
Since his arrival to Gainesville back in December, the former Tulane Green Waves’ head coach has accumulated a total of 24 commits in the 2027 cycle. This includes the likes of five-star offensive tackle Maxwell Hiller, along with 15 four-star commits. However, Sumrall and the Gators’ coaching staff have an opportunity this week to bolster its highly-regarded class on Wednesday morning.
According to Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett on Monday afternoon, 2027 four-star EDGE Marquis Evans is set to announce his commitment on Jul 1st, with the Gators being featured in the mix for the talented defender.
Could Florida Land Evans On Wednesday?
Evans, an impressive defensive lineman out of the state of Alabama, has quickly become one of the hottest names in the upcoming recruiting class. The elite pass rusher is the No. 17-ranked prospect out of the state of Alabama, as well as the No. 38 defensive lineman in the 2027 class, per 247Sports’ Composite.
In his last two seasons at Spain Park High School, Evans caught the attention of many powerhouse programs across the country by recording 73 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, eight sacks, and two forced fumbles during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. And with his unique blend of size (6-foot-4, 250 lbs.) and athleticism, allows him to be a consider threat for opposing quarterbacks when on the field.
Earlier this month, the Gators and Sumrall were fortunate to host Evans for an official visit, with his trip to Gainesville being one of five stops for the rising playmaker this summer. However, in order for Florida to secure a commitment from Evans this week, the program must fight off multiple prolific schools for the Alabama native, such as the Tennessee Volunteers, the South Carolina Gamecocks, and the Miami Hurricanes.
If the Gators are able to successfully land Evans on Wednesday, he will become the first true EDGE prospect to commit to Florida in the 2027 class. Sumrall’s first recruiting class with the program includes multiple defensive linemen, such as four-star Cahron Wheeler, but a commitment from Evans would be a massive help for the Gators in the foreseeable future.
