Speedster Majay Thompson pledged to Florida State despite program instability, prioritizing honest dialogue with Mike Norvell about his future as the Seminoles face a high-stakes 2026 season.
3-star wide receiver Majay Thompson, out of Crest High School in Shelby, North Carolina, has committed to Mike Norvell and Florida State for the 2027 class. He pledged to the Seminoles over offers from Wake Forest and Georgia.
At 5-foot-11, 181 pounds, Thompson has elite speed (4.4 in the 40-yard dash) and is a playmaker. With his speed, he can easily stretch the field in the vertical passing game, and can make plays in space in the short passing game as well, especially on screen passes and jet sweeps.
Last season at Crest, Thompson caught 53 passes for 865 yards and 13 touchdowns, and averaged 16 yards per catch. He also added a touchdown on a punt return.
In an interview with Chris Nee of Noles247 on June 14, Thompson spoke about the recruiting process with the Seminoles and also about the concerns he had with the coaching staff.
“Just about coaching stability and what could happen with the season, if the season was to go bad," Thompson said. "All in all, coach, he's got some more years. Coach Harris just got that extension because he's the offensive coordinator. So, all in all, everything is good.”
It is no surprise that Norvell is on the hot seat. The Seminoles have posted a 7-17 record over the past two seasons under his watch, and have won just three games on their ACC slate. But somehow, Norvell survived the coaching ax and got the green light for one more season on the sidelines at Doak Campbell Stadium.
Thompson is the second receiver to commit to the Seminoles in this recruiting cycle. 4-star receiver Sean Green committed to Florida State on June 9. With Thompson’s commitment, Florida State’s 2027 class, currently at 11 recruits, ranks No. 15 in the ACC, and No. 56 nationally.
Heading into the 2026 season, the schedule is daunting. The Seminoles will face SMU, considered to be the No. 2 team in the ACC, and Alabama in the month of September. They also play Miami and Clemson, and will finish the season against the Florida Gators. The Seminoles win total for the 2026 season is projected to be 6.5.
If the Seminoles do not exceed that win total by any significance, then the concerns that Thompson had about the Seminoles’ coaching staff could surface once again and maybe change Thompson’s mindset toward Norvell and Florida State. To prevent that from happening, the Seminoles just need to win.
