As recruiting rankings plummet and the hot seat warms, Mike Norvell must secure elite talent at three foundational positions to salvage the Seminoles’ future in the SEC.
Florida State head coach Mike Norvell’s situation is turning critical in Tallahassee. After a 5-7 losing season, the Seminoles recruiting class currently ranks as No. 45 nationally per 247 Sports—a number that is unheard of for a program of this stature.
The Hot Seat noise surrounding Norvell is simultaneously getting louder, and restoring the recruiting momentum might be one of the few ways left to silence the chatter.
Norvell’s Class of 2027 has locked only six commits so far, which alone should have the sirens wailing inside the Moore Athletic Center. The situation has almost turned into a full-blown continuation crisis.
Only 32% of their previous production is returning (ranking #98 in the country), and they need players for almost every position to make a functioning squad by the end of August.
Here is the breakdown of the three positions they needed to find answers to yesterday:
Quarterback
Every FSU analyst can’t stress this enough: Norvell needs to find his next franchise QB to handle the SEC pocket pressure, or the Seminoles might not even survive the regular season. They don't have a single QB commit for Class of 2027.
Up until May 1, they were counting on the previous 4-star commit, Wonderful "Champ" Monds IV, to take over the QB1 in Norvell’s complex offense. However, he flipped to Notre Dame and left the Noles in a crisis for the position in 2027.
They can’t afford to take more gambles with Ashton Daniels, too, after inconsistent production last season. From OC to QB coach, everyone under Norvell is scrambling to secure a QB to at least be the safety net for 2027, if not the face of their program. Kevin Sperry, Malachi Marshall, and Jaden O'Neal are the remaining QBs on FSU's roster, and the entire Seminoles program will be counting on them.
Offensive Tackle
FSU’s Class of 2027 has zero OT commits. Three of their six commits are DLs, two are safeties, and one, Connor Winn, is a tight end. Assistant coach Herb Hand did a solid job on offense line last year, but the Seminoles had to rely solely on transfers at the position. That's why they’re left searching for more this year as well.
What they need to do is recruit and grow multi-year starters. Blue-chip OT DaJohn Yarborough is top on Herb’s OT priority list for now, with his official visit set in June, and his official decision date also set in late-June. The 4-star 6-foot-5, 340-pound monster from Arizona could be the threat FSU needs to survive in the SEC.
Lake Burger and Mark Matthews are others who the Noles staff will be closely keeping an eye on, and pulling every trick up their sleeve to secure a commitment.
Interior defensive lineman
Interior defensive linemen have been the very foundation of FSU’s dominant defensive style. However, the veterans are aging out and will be gone by 2027.
The staff has a few fresh faces as defensive positional coaches, think DE coach Nick Williams, and they could be building something sustainable and scary for 2027.
For that, though, they will need serious depth. Mississippi’s 4-star Sam LeJeune will be the name to watch here.
