The Seminoles take a huge roster hit here by losing the sophomore.

Florida State is watching its roster attrition take shape inside the basketball court. But now Martin Somerville is the latest to exit Tallahassee.

Somerville, who became an impactful new addition to first-year head coach Luke Loucks, revealed his intentions to leave for the NCAA Transfer Portal. Noles247 unveiled the Sommerville news on Tuesday afternoon.

Somerville cracked the starting lineup in 10 games plus received action in 33 total games. He'll leave FSU averaging eight points per game, which he delivered through an average of 26 minutes.

He went on to shoot 33.6% from field goal range, including hitting 33.7% of his 3-pointers. Somerville collected three rebounds a night as well, plus dished out 2.4 assists per game. He showed value on defense too, grabbing 1.5 steals per game.

He won over Seminole fans with his Valentine's Day outing in Blacksburg, Va.: Dropping 23 points to beat Virginia Tech on the road. Somerville only missed two shot attempts that day (9-of-11 shooting), plus hit a quartet of 3-pointers in the victory over the Hokies.

Somerville will look for his third different college in the last three seasons.

The 6-foot-3 point guard originally started his career with UMass Lowell before heading the Tallahassee. He earned the 2025 American East Rookie of the Year award after hitting 13.6 points per game through 31.5 total minutes. He managed to start in 12 contests for the River Hawks, who have played at the NCAA Division I level since the 2013-14 season.

Suspicion grew that Somerville was going to be on his way out, per Chris Nee of 247Sports

"You then go down the list of the likes of Somerville, AJ Swinton (tore his ACL late in the year), and Miles and figure out how, and if, they fit in - both financially and with what they believe their roles should be. It is likely that some of those players venture into the transfer portal for a different role, or price, at a different place," Nee said last Tuesday.

Sounds like financial constraints are a big reason why Somerville will look elsewhere. The era of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) has impacted rosters even on the hardwood. Which also impacts scholarship distribution.

Loucks will be point guard searching in the portal. He's aiming to capitalize on a late-season surge FSU went on that included nearly upsetting Duke in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. FSU ended 18-15 overall and eighth in the ACC.
