The Georgia Bulldogs are headed into their biggest game of the season tonight.
The Georgia Bulldogs are headed into their biggest game of the season on Saturday night in Tuscaloosa against the Alabama Crimson Tide where they will try to secure their first win in Bryant-Denny Stadium since 2007.
While Kirby Smart has slain the Alabama dragon during the postseason, 2007 was indeed the last regular season victory for the Dawgs over the Tide, and it's time for them to change that. It's going to be the first real test for Georgia this season after largely blowouts through the first five weeks of the year.
There are clear advantages for the Bulldogs in terms of certain roster areas, but one who not many would tip in the favor of Georgia is the quarterback position. Alabama sophomore sensation Keelon Russell has looked the part and more of ascending superstar and is getting a ton of national love, but could the Dawgs steady presence in Gunner Stockton be an equalizer here?
Experience of Gunner Stockton Could Benefit Georgia in This Game
For as great as Russell has looked through his first five starts, it's an undeniable fact that he has never played in a game like this. Stockton on the other hand is in his second full year as a starter and third year having played in some very huge matchups. You simply cannot practice or replicate the pressure that comes in a showdown of top-10 SEC teams, and Stockton has lived it.
Russell on the other hand has not.
While he has not shown any signs of slowing down, Georgia is the best defense Russell has faced in his life and this is the most significant game of his career to this point. It's not out of the realm of possibility that the Dawgs could get to Russell early and rattle him a little bit, something they would pounce on swiftly.
The steady hand of Stockton is not something you can quantify on a stat sheet, but it is absolutely something that benefits you in a game like this. It's possible that Russell is just as poised and collected, but he has not been tested to this point like this.
Georgia needs to make sure they make him uncomfortable, and if they can do more than just that, it could be a long night for the young sophomore. If he does get it going and the Bulldogs can't stop him, then it will be the visitors who have an excruciating evening instead.
