The Georgia Bulldogs made a huge move on Monday morning.
The Georgia Bulldogs suffered one of their worst losses in years over the weekend with the first home defeat against the Auburn Tigers in more than 20 years in a game where they were simply stunned.
After the defeat, Kirby Smart talked about moving on and turning the page to get better, a sentiment he often speaks about especially with a bye week coming up for the Dawgs. Clearly though, it's not just talks from the Georgia head coach, because come Monday morning, he made a massive move for the future of the program with a significant flipped prospect from a hated rival.
The top junior college defensive lineman in the nation in a player who was originally a native of the Peach State, Christian Mays, was committed to the Tennessee Volunteers, however that is no longer the case after some huge flip news that he is headed to Athens.
Georgia Flips Christian Mays from Tennessee Volunteers
Mays was in Athens this past weekend for his official visit, and clearly this was enough to get the Bulldogs over the finish line during what has been a very strong push to land his services.
"I grew up in Georgia, middle Georgia, so always seeing Georgia logos, always seeing Georgia Bulldogs," Mays told UGA Sports On3. "“I always had it in my mind as kind of a dream, but being on the OV, just the hospitality with all the people and coaching staff, all the, all the bells and whistles they got, you know, that’s not the important part, but just the brotherhood they got, the mindset they got, you know, winning programs, just things of that nature."
Mays is going to be enrolled at Georgia as a junior and will have two years of eligibility remaining, and given the type of player he is already developing into, it's safe to say the Dawgs are getting a potential future superstar along this defensive line.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 310 pounds, Mays already has the kind of frame which could contribute heavily right away as soon as next season, however he knows he will have to come in and earn every snap he can get.
This is a place which develops defensive line talent at the absolute highest level, and if Mays is going to be the next star, he is in a great place to get developed into the absolute best player he can be.
Flipping him from Tennessee -- a place which right now has an absolutely dominant defensive line -- should be seen as a major recruiting victory too. Keep an eye on Mays as soon as next season, because he just might be a key piece right out of the gate.
