The Georgia Bulldogs were stunned, but Kirby Smart is ready to move on.
The Georgia Bulldogs lost an absolute shocker on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Auburn Tigers for the first time in the last 10 games and the first time at home in more than two decades.
Despite the struggles from the Tigers coming into this one, Auburn came in and was the better team, out-executing Georgia in their own building and showing more discipline with the football than the Dawgs were able to do. It has not been very often that Kirby Smart has had to address the media after a regular season loss, especially one at home, but that was the case this week.
Smart never sugar coats and never says anything he does not mean, so his rant after this defeat should not have surprised many folks. In his opening statement, Smart issued a sentiment of moving on and learning from this while also acknowledging the product his team put on the field was not good enough.
Smart: "The Dawgs Beat the Dawgs Today"
"We like to say the Dawgs don't beat the Dawgs, but they found a way to beat themselves today," Smart said. "Like I say, humility is a week away, Auburn played better than us today, executed better than us today, didn't turn the ball over and hit the red area plays and we had some really really untimely undisciplined and uncharacteristic penalties.
"So I give them credit but at the end of the day we pick it up, everything we want to do is in front of us. I know it's a big deal to everyone else but to me it's another game and we have to turn around and get ready to play again."
It's moments like these where Smart gets to do his most actual coaching, a point he made later in the press conference. Of course, you want to win every game you play, but Smart likely relishes the opportunities where he can give his team legitimate evidence that they may not have been as bullet proof as they may have thought. In an era where 12 teams make the postseason and a loss like this does not cripple your hopes, it can often be spun into a positive.
Should Smart and the Dawgs be able to turn this thing around headed into the bye week and another rivalry game after that against the Florida Gators, being able to re-focus and reset will be a big part of the reason why.
Auburn played a sensational game and deserve every bit of that victory, and them being the better team in Sanford Stadium is not something this staff is going to overlook. With that being said, the next game after a loss comes even quicker, and Georgia clearly has some things to work on over the next two weeks as they try to figure it out and get better.
And there's no one better than Smart in the country at helping them do just that, so this Bulldogs team will be just fine.
