The Georgia Bulldogs are getting busy during the bye week.
The Georgia Bulldogs are in their bye week and trying to improve not only this year's team, but also building the future generation of Dawgs stars during what is one of the biggest recruiting weeks of the year.
Kirby Smart and this staff are always hard at work recruiting wise even with games coming up, but a week off gives them a chance to really dive into talent acquisition, and that is what they are doing with commitments and flip targets over the last couple weeks. In recruiting though, players also wind up de-committing and pledging their allegiances elsewhere, and this was the case with linebacker Temorris Campbell Jr. this week, however now the Bulldogs are coveting another linebacker.
According to some intel from UGA Sports, Georgia has ramped up the pursuit of an in-state linebacker currently committed to the Kentucky Wildcats in Sequoyah three-star Drew Williams.
Bulldogs Pushing Hard for Flip of Williams from Kentucky
"I hear from them a good amount, like weekly with Coach Schumann," told UGA Sports back in September. "I hear from Coach Smart every couple of weeks or so. I’ve heard from Coach Schumann pretty much like every couple of days, daily sometimes. He’s just kind of talking about developing me into a first-round or second-round NFL linebacker."
Fascinatingly, Williams talked about development -- especially as a relatively unheralded three-star -- being so big at Georgia and the fact that they have the proven concept of developing guys like him into eventual highly selected NFL Draft picks. Notably though, there is still not a visit on the books to get Williams to Athens and he says he is still firmly locked in with Kentucky.
With that being said, it's clear Williams is being given a lot to think about by the Bulldogs program, and the pursuit of any defensive player from Kirby Smart and Glenn Schumann would be difficult to ignore and dismiss.
Rated by Rivals just outside the top-500 players in the nation and outside the top-50 players in the state of Georgia, landing Williams for the Dawgs would truly be a development project and someone who would have to buy into the system for multiple years to get better before seeing any real playing time.
That type of patience is not for everyone, and Williams is going to have to seriously consider what his priorities are if he's going to seriously entertain a flip from the Wildcats to the University of Georgia. If he is indeed made of the right stuff -- which a pursuit from the Dawgs indicates he likely is -- perhaps Williams could wind up being a great fit for Georgia should they be able to flip him.
