The Georgia Bulldogs are not going to be unprepared for the Oklahoma Sooners.
The Georgia Bulldogs are headed into their biggest game of the season so far this week with the Oklahoma Sooners coming to town in what should provide the Dawgs with their first real test.
Despite the struggled from Oklahoma on the offensive side of the ball, this is still one of the best defenses in college football and one which is capable of giving Georgia a whole lot of problems if they are on their game. Nobody knows this better than Kirby Smart, who was asked this week to describe the characteristics of a Brent Venables coached defense.
His answer proved that not only is Georgia taking this game as seriously as possible, but that he also has a whole lot of respect for Venables and the way he runs his Sooners program.
Kirby Smart Respects Venables, Oklahoma Defense
"Very fundamentally sound, aggressive, attacking," Smart said when asked to describe the traits before adding how they are near the best in the nation yearly in sacks and tackles for loss. "I don't think people give their coaches and their kids enough credit for how they play. I mean they get off blocks, they strike you, they play with unbelievable pad level and really an intensity that's kind of unmatched.
"The way they play, you see it on tape, and [Venables] has always been that way. He did it at Clemson and he's a great defensive coach."
Smart has a whole lot of respect for the way Venables and this Sooners program goes about its business, and it's easy to see why that's the case. While they have not figured out the offensive side of the ball yet and that reality is likely going to cause Georgia to win the game, this defense is capable of keeping Oklahoma in it against any team it faces.
A vintage Venables performance is capable of the Sooners coming into Athens and leaving with a victory, and obviously Smart knows that better than anyone. While it remains to be seen how this Bulldogs offense fares against its first real test, if they struggle it will not be because they were caught off guard.
Georgia will be ready and armed with the knowledge that this is a very dangerous defense, and if the Bulldogs can pass this test and produce against the Sooners, it would be a very encouraging sign for the rest of the season moving forward.
