The Georgia Bulldogs head coach may be having some serious thoughts.
The Georgia Bulldogs won a big one this weekend, defeating their hated rival Florida Gators for the sixth straight time and earning a big victory coming out of the bye to get things back on track.
This is a Bulldogs team who has as strong a chance as anyone in the country to make a deep playoff run, and while they are undeniably flawed, so is every other contender in the sport right now. Kirby Smart has a team which is tough, gritty, and capable of beating anyone, but there's no denying things are different in the sport than they were when he won his first two national titles.
NIL has leveled the playing field, but it seems like depth on teams is being tested not just by a lack of five-stars for the best programs, but injuries at a higher rate than ever before. Smart, who is one of the biggest voices in college football, does not have an explanation as to why, but he has absolutely noticed it. He spoke about it in the postgame press conference, and the way he was talking, it seems like it would not be a shock to see him walk away from the game earlier than some would hope.
Kirby Smart Makes Big Points About Changes in CFB, Injuries
"I don't have a good answer for that," Smart said thoughtfully when asked about the depth issues in the sport. "People are going to have to make a choice of how you want to practice...I don't know that the players are any different, I think about the teams we had [in 2021 and 2022], how physical they were and how they practiced, and we can't even be close to that now.
"Is it a different culture that guys don't want to as much? I don't know. They were definitely hungrier because there was a motivation to make it. A lot of these guys, honestly, make more than I made until I was 40, so it's just a different day and age."
Smart is not complaining, but pointing out very real circumstances that every coach in the nation is dealing with right now, and whether or not it's indicative of anything bigger or not remains to be seen. It does seem this year though that Smart has been more existential than ever in his thoughts in press conferences, and it makes sense why some would think the end of his career could be a whole lot closer than folks think.
It's not to say he is planning on walking away tomorrow or anything like that, but if Georgia were to win another national title this year or in the years ahead, it would not be shocking to see Smart wind up hanging it up sooner than expected.
Regardless, Bulldogs fans should keep enjoying the ride and savoring every moment, because you truly don't ever know when it could all come to an end.
