Memphis basketball officially announced the addition of three new assistants for Penny Hardaway’s staff next season. It was reported yesterday that Tony Madlock would join the staff as the associate head coach, but the Tigers also announced the additions of Sean Mock and Trevor DeLoach.
The three coaches join the program to replace Mike Davis, Jermaine Johnson and Roy Rogers, who weren’t retained at the end of the season. All three of the new assistants have experience in the American Conference.
Mock joins the staff after spending the last seven seasons on Ron Hunter’s staff at Tulane. While on staff with the Green Wave, Mock helped develop several key players, including Kevin Cross, Jalen Cook and Rowan Brumbaugh.
Mock joined Hunter’s staff at Georgia State before heading to New Orleans, and he’s spent time at Henderson State, Northwood University and Miami University (Ohio), where he was a four-year letterman and co-captain.
DeLoach has spent time at Charlotte and UTSA, and he was named to the Silver Waves Media’s Elite 75 “Future Head Coach” list in 2025. He spent the 2024-25 season with the Roadrunners, and the following season, he was on staff with the 49ers.
DeLoach has been heavily involved in recruiting and player development at both stops and is considered to be one of the better up-and-coming coaches in the conference.
Former Charlotte coach Aaron Fearne called DeLoach “one of the best recruiters in the business” in a social media post after Memphis made the hire official.
Memphis also officially announced the hire of Tony Madlock on Monday.
“I’m excited about the experience and energy this group brings to our program,” Hardaway said in a statement. “Tony’s deep Memphis ties and head coaching success combined with Sean and Trevor’s proven ability to develop players and recruit at a high level, make this a strong addition to our staff as we continue building toward our ultimate goal of postseason success.”
It was important to add the assistants this week to give them time to get acclimated to Hardaway’s system and prepare before the transfer portal opens on April 7.
