Memphis basketball announced on social media that it has hired Gabriel Harris to be the team’s general manager. Harris is currently the general manager for the Stockton Kings, the Sacramento Kings’ G-League affiliate.
Harris has spent the last three seasons with the Kings, including over two years as the team’s general manager. Before being promoted to that role, he spent time as the team’s assistant general manager.
Prior to joining the Kings’ organization, he spent nearly nine years with Adidas and served in various roles, including roles related to the grassroots basketball scene. Harris served as the Sports Marketing Manager for grassroots basketball, where he led “scouting, signing, and maintaining relationships with grassroots partners and platforms,” according to his LinkedIn profile.
As Stockton’s general manager, Harris “was directly responsible for roster construction, contract negotiations, team management and day-to-day basketball operations,” according to Memphis’ statement, and he led the Kings to the 2025 NBA G-League Championship. Currently, the Kings are 23-13 and playing in the West semifinals of the G-League playoffs.
With Stockton’s success under Harris, multiple players have advanced to NBA opportunities, including undrafted players like Mason Jones, Terry Taylor and Daquan Jeffries.
“I’m excited for this next chapter with the University of Memphis,” Harris said in a statement. “The history, expectations, and tradition of Memphis basketball are what drew me to this opportunity, and I look forward to working with Coach Hardaway to help build a highly successful program.”
As the Tigers’ general manager, Harris will work closely with Penny Hardaway and the coaching staff, and he will play a huge role in roster construction, especially in the transfer portal. In the G-League, there is a lot of roster turnover from year to year, so he has shown success a roster every year.
“We are thrilled to welcome Gabriel Harris to Memphis,” Hardaway said in a statement. “Gabriel brings a modern approach and new perspective to roster management, along with valuable experience at the professional level. His leadership and vision will be instrumental as we continue to build a championship-caliber program.”
Harris also played college basketball at Stanford under Johnny Dawkins from 2009 to 2012, and he was a member of the 2012 NIT championship team.
Harris is the fourth staff hire announced this week after the program made official the additions of assistants Tony Madlock, Sean Mock and Trevor DeLoach on Monday.
