Southern Miss transfer Tylik Weeks committed to Memphis on Friday. The forward spent his first two seasons at Southwest Mississippi Community College before spending his junior campaign at Southern Miss.

Weeks was a starter from day one at Southwest Mississippi Community College, and he averaged 17.2 points and 8.2 rebounds in 30 games. As a sophomore, he averaged 21 points and 8.3 rebounds in 29 games, including 28 starts, and he was ranked the No. 26 JUCO prospect in the country.

At Southern Miss, he led the team in scoring, averaging 19.7 points on 46.4 percent from the field, and he added 5.4 rebounds in 33.6 minutes per game. In the Sun Belt tournament, he averaged 26.5 points over a four-game span before his team was eliminated.

Weeks was a top 40 scorer in college basketball last season, but he isn’t a three-point shooter. The forward shot only 22.2 percent from deep on 1.6 attempts per game, and he went on a 20-game span where he didn’t make a single three-pointer and averaged less than a three-pointer per game.

Weeks’ scoring mainly comes from the mid-range and around the rim, and he averaged 11.4 points in the paint per 40 minutes, ranking in the 85th percentile. A lot of his production comes from mid-range shots, and he shot better than 40 percent in the mid-range last season.

The forward also has a knack for getting to the charity stripe, and he averaged 9.4 free-throw attempts per 40 minutes, ranking in the 99th percentile. He averaged 7.8 free throws per game, and he shot 82.3 percent from the free-throw line.

The New York native can also make an impact defensively. He averaged nearly a steal per game, and he has a slightly positive defensive regularized adjusted plus-minus rating.

At 6-foot-7 and 225 pounds, Weeks has a nice frame. He uses his body to play a physical brand of basketball offensively and can be a factor on the boards, averaging more than five rebounds per game.

Memphis has added some nice pieces to the roster, but they needed a go-to scorer. Weeks fills that role and will be the primary scoring option for the Tigers.

The forward had an extremely high usage rate last season, 30 percent, and his production should make things easier for the pass-first point guards on the roster.

Weeks visited Memphis last week, and Penny Hardaway and his staff are now 3-for-3 in landing players who took visits to Memphis over the last two weeks. The forward is the 12th player to commit to next season’s roster, and the Tigers now have three roster spots available.
