Despite a stacked backfield, freshman Javian Mallory showcases speed and physicality, hinting at a bright future for the Miami Hurricanes' ground game.
Despite changes among the offensive line, wide receivers, and quarterback, the Miami Hurricanes have continuity within the running backs core. It starts with homegrown star Mark Fletcher Jr., followed by CharMar Brown, Girard Pringle Jr., and Jordan Lyle. However, a new face joins the room in freshman Javian Mallory. Despite joining a loaded running back core, the newcomer will have an opportunity to learn valuable insight from established veterans.
Mallory was a four-star recruit coming from West Boca Raton Community High School, located in Palm Beach County. He rushed 524 times for 4,479 yards, scoring 56 touchdowns in 48 total games as an eighth grader to senior. Mallory showed versatility, playing as a free safety and returning a couple of kicks on special teams.
The 18-year-old was ranked 363rd nationally, 24th among running backs, and 48th in the state of Florida for the 2026 recruiting class, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He received interest and offers from numerous programs, including the Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, South Florida Bulls, Ohio State Buckeyes, Louisville Cardinals, Alabama Crimson Tide, Oregon Ducks, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, South Carolina Gamecocks, Ole Miss Rebels, and Utah Utes, among several others. Mallory committed to the Hurricanes on March 22, 2025.
Coming off a National Championship appearance, the run game played a significant role in the historic run. Fletcher Jr. led the charge by rushing 75 times for a College Football Playoff record-breaking 507 yards, scoring three total touchdowns in four games.
Mallory will likely redshirt to preserve NCAA eligibility, but the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native can stand by and learn what it takes to succeed at the collegiate level. He made a strong impression among fans in the Hurricanes’ spring game on Saturday, April 18.
The freshman running back possesses great speed and is physical enough to force missed tackles. Mallory is capable of playing in the receiving game, catching 51 passes for 908 yards, scoring 14 touchdowns.
Mallory was the only running back in the 2026 recruiting class.
Following next season, Fletcher Jr. will likely declare for the next NFL Draft and Lyle will first become eligible, still having an extra year of NCAA eligibility.
As Mallory’s opportunities appear to be limited as a freshman, the homegrown prospect could begin to make a mark on special teams or with the practice squad. As the 18-year-old develops, the Hurricanes are the early favorites to win the ACC Football Championship and return to the College Football Playoffs.
The program isn’t holding onto past success, but is focused on moving forward and improving.
