Philadelphia lands the massive Miami Hurricanes left tackle prospect. Markel Bell's rare size and zero sacks allowed promise intrigue for the Eagles' offensive line.
The Miami Hurricanes established an identity of dominating matchups in the trenches, especially after coach Mario Cristobal took over. En route to a National Championship appearance, the team’s offensive line was among the best in the country. On the opposite side of All-American right tackle Francis Mauigoa, who was selected by the New York Giants with the 10th pick, was left tackle Markel Bell.
The 21-year-old prospect made headlines at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, due to having a unique body frame for an offensive lineman. He measured at 6-9 1/4, 346 pounds, 36 3/8 inch arm length, and nine-inch hands. Bell ran the 40-yard dash at the Combine, recording a 5.36 unofficial timing, 1.84 10-yard dash.
The lengthy offensive lineman was viewed as a sleeper selection among the class. Bell will have an opportunity to prove it after the Philadelphia Eagles drafted him with the 68th pick. They were among the best in protecting three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl Champion quarterback Jalen Hurts, only allowing 36 sacks, tied for 11th best in the league.
The prospect’s collegiate career began at the JuCo level with the Holmes Community College Bulldogs, located in Goodman, Mississippi. After two seasons and earning NJCAA All-Region honors, Bell took on an opportunity to join the Hurricanes. He received interest and offers from other programs, including the South Florida Bulls, Ole Miss Rebels, Louisville Cardinals, and Mississippi State Bulldogs. After being recruited by offensive line coach Alex Mirabal, Bell followed him to Coral Gables, Florida.
The uniquely-sized offensive lineman was the Hurricanes’ full-time left tackle starter last season. In 1,034 offensive snaps played, he only gave up a hit, 15 total pressures, and didn’t allow a single sack in 16 games.
Bell played a significant role in the Hurricanes’ run game, especially in the College Football Playoffs, allowing program star Mark Fletcher Jr. to rush for a record-breaking 507 yards.
Despite the unique frame, some concerns come with it. Despite not giving up a sack, Bell might struggle against quicker edge rushers at the next level and could face gravity leverage disadvantages. He’s projected to compete for a backup role.
Bell has the intangibles and size to be a unique talent at the NFL level, but there needs to be consistent production on the field. He was capable of developing into a reliable starter for the Hurricanes. Time will determine whether or not it happens with the Eagles.
