The Miami Hurricanes men's basketball program lands three-star forward Christopher Birden Jr., adding another dimension to an evolving roster under head coach Jai Lucas.
The Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball program made significant strides during the offseason. They officially signed guard Acaden Lewis and center Somto Cyril, then landed a commitment from forward DeSean Goode, all of whom joined from the transfer portal. Coming off a historic 26-9 season, coach Jai Lucas looks to revamp the roster to reach new heights.
The program will welcome new transfer portal talent and high school recruits. Alongside five-star Caleb Gaskins joins Christopher Birden Jr, who committed to the Hurricanes on Tuesday. There aren’t any available rankings from 247Sports or On3, but ESPN lists him as a three-star prospect and ranked 55th among power forwards.
Birden Jr. was primarily recruited by Hurricanes assistant coach Charlton “CY” Young. He has a relationship with Christopher Birden Jr., a former teammate and roommate at Georgia Southern. They were part of the 1992 Eagles roster that last reached the NCAA Tournament in program history.
Given the current team’s construction, Birden Jr. is unlikely to play significant minutes for the Hurricanes as a freshman. The frontcourt consists of Shelton Henderson, Marcus Allen, Goode, and Gaskins.
Birden Jr. currently attends South Kent School, a private all-boys boarding institution located in Litchfield County, Connecticut. He received interest and offers from the Texas State Bobcats, Western Carolina Catamounts, Northeastern Huskies, East Tennessee State Buccaneers, and California Baptist Lancers.
The Hurricanes seek to remain competitive while valuing the development of high school recruits to maintain long-term stability. Birden Jr. will have an opportunity to learn from coach Lucas and a few impactful, established veterans, such as Henderson and guard Dante Allen. Given a unique 6-10 frame, the three-star recruit could develop attributes that will work in the paint and outside the perimeter.
Coach Lucas will likely demand Birden Jr. to be aggressive in crashing the glass, similar to Malik Reneau, 6-8, who was with the Hurricanes this past season.
The program has an opportunity to develop a potential hidden gem who can surpass expectations and deliver a significant impact.
The Hurricanes currently have eight players on the roster for next season, with five spots left to fill. The men’s basketball transfer portal window officially closed on Tuesday, but there’s still plenty of talent to recruit and potentially land.
Coach Lucas established a new winning culture and standard within the program, only looking to take things a step further after reaching the NCAA Tournament. Birden Jr. could emerge as a surprising immediate factor, but the rest of the offseason will likely determine that.
