NFL insider reveals a rising star could surprise on draft night. Can former Miami Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck's impressive football IQ and turnaround story vault him into the first round?

The NFL Draft is officially hours away before Commissioner Roger Goodell takes the stage in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and starts calling on prospects from a valuable card. The class features 16 former Miami Hurricanes players, and quarterback Carson Beck is one of the bunch. After playing six seasons of college football, the 24-year-old will finally embark on a new journey.

The quarterback group this year isn’t regarded as elite as past classes. Outside of projected first pick Fernando Mendoza, there appears to be a significant gap in talent among the position. Beck is a projected third or later round selection, but NFL insider Tom Pelissero suggests there may be a surge in the former Hurricanes’ draft stock on Wednesday’s edition of The Rich Eisen Show.

“The quarterback who is going to go higher than every projection has had him in this process, I believe, is Carson Beck,” he said. “There was a lot the teams had to sort through going back to Georgia. All the things they saw on social media, all the things that they heard out of the program, the celebrity obsessions, and him and Kirby Smart not getting along. To his credit, Carson Beck heard some of that stuff after he transferred to Miami. He cleaned up some of those things. Carson Beck has impressed people in the process when he’s meeting with coaches. He comes across, as one scout put it to me, has a beautiful mind in terms of football IQ. He knows exactly what’s going on on the football field.”

Pelissero mentioned that the chances Beck gets selected in the first round aren’t strong, but “can’t 100 percent rule it out.”

“There’s enough teams that have a quarterback need,” he added. “I would not be surprised if Carson Beck goes–I believe he will go in the second round of this draft. There’s at least a non-trivial chance, again based on the fact that everybody in the back half of the first round is going to have a second-round grade. I would not 100 percent rule out the idea of Carson Beck somehow finding his way into the bottom of round one.”

In Beck’s final collegiate season with the Hurricanes, he completed 338 of 467 passes, 72.4 completion percentage, throwing for 3,813 yards and 30 touchdowns, plus 12 interceptions, starting in all 16 games. The Jacksonville, Florida, native led the program to its first National Championship appearance in over two decades. Beck was coming off UCL surgery, recovering from an injury that occurred in the SEC Championship game against the Texas Longhorns while playing for the Bulldogs, before playing a snap for the Hurricanes.

After overcoming personal adversity, the quarterback prospect experienced a personal turnaround. Beck confirmed to have met with the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. Each organization has a draft pick in the bottom half of the first round.

Beck won't be present at the NFL Draft, but will likely be called upon by an NFL franchise. The streaming will begin at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, streaming on the NFL Network, ESPN, and ABC.
