The Miami Hurricanes are in a tough position, making history in the College Football Playoffs after upsetting the reigning champion Ohio State Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl quarterfinals, with a final score of 24-14. They dominated from beginning to end, never trailing, even combating a second-half surge in an attempted comeback.
The defense came through with marvelous moments, such as redshirt senior cornerback Keionte Scott recording a 72-yard pick-six, which resulted in him being named the Defensive Player of the Game. The edge rushing star duo of redshirt senior Akheem Mesidor and junior Rueben Bain Jr. combined for eight total tackles, six solos and two assists, 3.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks.
The offense also had an improved outing compared to the first-round matchup against the Texas A&M Aggies. Junior running back star and hometown hero Mark Fletcher Jr. rushed 19 times for 90 yards, finishing with 115 total, recording a touchdown. Redshirt sophomore running back CharMar Brown followed behind him, rushing five times for 26 yards, finishing with 31 total, recording a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Redshirt senior star quarterback Carson Beck completed 19 of 26 passes, 73.1 percent, for 138 yards, throwing for one touchdown. Despite the great success, the Hurricanes must simultaneously attack the business side of college football as the transfer portal has officially opened.
It's been reported that the program is set to meet with defensive tackle Brandon Davis-Swain. He's spent the last couple of seasons with the Colorado Buffaloes, recording 17 combined tackles, seven solos and 10 assists, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. After limited playing time on the football field, the Michigan native is ready for a new chapter.
The Texas A&M Aggies, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and Mississippi State Bulldogs will also meet with the redshirt freshman.
Davis-Swain was a four-star recruit coming out of West Bloomfield High School, recording 276 total tackles, 50 sacks, 95 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and one forced fumble after four seasons. He received interest from multiple powerhouse programs, such as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Indiana Hoosiers, Auburn Tigers, and many others, before committing to the Buffaloes on June 10th, 2022.
The Hurricanes were also a part of his recruiting process, including a couple of locals in the Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans.
As Davis-Swain further evaluates his options, the idea of playing under the leadership of defensive line coach Jason Taylor, an NFL Hall of Famer, could be a massive attraction.
