Hurricanes Sign Big 10 Star Defensive Lineman cover image

Nebraska Cornhuskers standout Keona Davis joins the Miami Hurricanes' defensive line, bolstering a unit aiming for championship contention after key departures.

As the extended transfer portal window closed on Saturday, the Miami Hurricanes continue to collect talent for next season. There are a few notable departures from the defensive line heading to the NFL draft, such as linebacker Wesley Bissainthe, who officially declared, and edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain Jr., who are very likely to declare.

The program has some gaps to fill, but after adding Damon Wilson II on Thursday, the program received the commitment of defensive lineman Keona Davis, reported on Saturday.

He spent the last two years with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but started in 12 out of 13 games this past season, recording 32 total tackles, 18 solos and 14 assists, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one pass broken up, and one pass defended.

Davis was a three-star recruit coming out of Salpointe Catholic High School, recording 84 total tackles, 24 tackles for loss, and 12.5 sacks throughout his junior and senior years. He wasn't recruited by high-profile powerhouse programs, committing to the Cornhuskers on Feb. 7, 2024.

The Hurricanes' defensive line next season will see new personnel, but hoping to produce similar success. Players such as Justin Scott, Marquise Lightfoot, and Armondo Blount, among others, are expected to showcase for bigger roles. Also, Ahmad Moten Sr. and linebacker Mohamed Toure are returning for a final season with the program.

Adding Davis to the mix means more depth and versatility for Mario Cristobal and defensive line coach Jason Taylor to work with and develop.

In the Hurricanes' run towards the National Championship, winning matchups in "the trenches" played a crucial role. They recorded 16 sacks throughout those four College Football Playoff games, finishing with 50 for the whole year, which was number one in the country.

The program reached the big stage for the first time in over two decades, but looks to revamp the roster with goals of finishing what was started. Cristobal and the team successfully established a new culture and standard.

Davis has the opportunity to contribute to championship contention if the defensive line shows similar production to this past season. He may take another leap next season in a more expanded role with the Hurricanes.

The program is taking steps forward to remain in contention in college football. The success in the College Football Playoffs was only the beginning. Davis has two years left of eligibility. The only position that needs filling is a starting quarterback.
