The Miami Hurricanes bolster backcourt with 6-7 sharpshooter Nick Dorn, adding crucial three-point threat and size to contend in the ACC.

Miami, FL. – The Miami Hurricanes men’s basketball program made significant changes to the roster, landing guard Acaden Lewis, center Somto Cyril, and forward DeSean Goode through the transfer portal. They have a couple of incoming freshmen in Caleb Gaskins and Chris Birden, both of whom can deliver an immediate impact.

There were still a few open roster spots left to fill and coach Jai Lucas used another on a significant transfer portal acquisition. It was reported on Friday, May 1, that former Indiana Hoosiers guard Nick Dorn committed to the Hurricanes. He averaged 8.1 points on 38 percent shooting from behind the arc and 2.3 rebounds in 30 games, including 12 starts.

Dorn delivers significant size to the backcourt, listed at 6-7, 225 pounds. He attended Julius L. Chambers High School, a public institution located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dorn averaged 10.6 points on 44 percent from the field, 37 percent from behind the arc, 2.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and a steal in 64 total games over four seasons.

The former high-school recruit went unranked and didn’t receive any offers from powerhouse programs. He wound up accepting a scholarship with the Elon Phoenix. As a freshman, the Charlotte native averaged 9.4 points on 39.2 percent shooting, 36.4 percent from behind the arc, and 3.1 rebounds in 30 games, including 22 starts. Dorn earned Coastal Athletic Association All-Freshman honors.

The following year, the overlooked prospect went on to have a career season. As a sophomore, Dorn averaged 15.2 points on 37.4 percent shooting, 35.1 percent from behind the arc, and 3.8 rebounds in 25 games, all starts. Afterwards, he decided to enter the transfer portal and landed with the Hoosiers.

It was Dorn’s first experience in playing within a powerhouse conference. He made the most of the opportunity, but reverted to a reserve role. The Hoosiers finished with an 18-14 overall record, 9-11 in Big 10 play, and were the 10-seed in the conference standings. They wound up missing the NCAA Tournament.

The Hurricanes add a tall guard who has a career 36.3 three-point percentage. Despite finishing with a 26-9 record, the team was among the bottom in shots made and attempted from behind the arc in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The program still has three open roster spots remaining, but the depth chart already looks better than last season.

Coach Lucas continues to make significant changes around Coral Gables, looking to contend among the best in the nation.
