The Miami Hurricanes chases a four-star tight end's commitment amidst recruiting challenges. He's a physical, versatile threat set to decide June 28.
Miami, FL. – The Miami Hurricanes look to regain lost ground on the high school recruiting trail after facing two decommitments and missing out on elite running back Myson Johnson-Cook to the Auburn Tigers. There will be other opportunities awaiting the program, especially as Anthony Cartwright III reaches a decision. The Detroit, Michigan, native is a four-star tight end who currently attends Detroit Country Day School, a private coeducational institution located in Oakland County.
Cartwright III isn’t an explosive route runner, but he can catch difficult passes thanks to a 6-5 frame that's often hard to tackle and stiff-arms defenders to the ground. The highly-touted prospect is versatile, playing snaps at defensive end. He doesn’t shy away from physicality, regardless of either side of the field.
As a commitment draws near, five programs were named as finalists: LSU Tigers, Oregon Ducks, Michigan State Spartans, Michigan Wolverines, and Hurricanes. An official decision is set to be announced on June 28.
Cartwright III is ranked 331st nationally, 16th among tight ends, and eighth in the state of Michigan for the 2027 recruiting class, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He has received interest and offers from numerous programs, including the Florida Gators, Ohio State Buckeyes, Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Wisconsin Badgers, Ole Miss Rebels, and Louisville Cardinals, among several others.
The Hurricanes will host an official visit with the four-star recruit on June 5, 23 days ahead of the commitment date. Cartwright III will have an opportunity to strongly evaluate the Coral Gables campus and facility, plus likely meet new tight ends coach Mike Viti, who was hired ahead of spring practices.
The Michigan native will take an official visit with the three other finalists ahead of the commitment date:
- Michigan State: May 29
- Michigan: July 12
- Oregon: July 16
Cartwright III had an official visit at LSU on Sunday, April 19.
If on the Hurricanes roster, the highly-touted tight end would have an opportunity to carve out a consistent role right away. There’s minimal in-game experience currently on the roster among the position’s room, outside of senior Elija Lofton, who is set to depart from the program after the upcoming season.
Despite setbacks, the program seeks to have a top-10 2027 recruiting class. They currently have eight hard commits, including four-star quarterback Israel Abrams, offensive tackle Sean Tatum, and four-star wide receiver Nick Lennear.
The Hurricanes will have a final opportunity to leave a lasting impression on Cartwright III before a final decision is made.
