The highly-touted running back could soon commit, bolstering the Miami Hurricanes' elite 2027 class and strengthening the ground game. Tune in Saturday for the announcement.
Spring football comes to an end for the Miami Hurricanes, but high school recruiting continues for the program. After parting ways with three-star offensive lineman Zaquan Linton and four-star wide receiver Ah’Mari Stevens, who committed to the LSU Tigers, there’s still elite talent to collect. The program’s 2027 class is projected to finish among the best in the nation, which could be solidified by securing Myson Johnson-Cook’s commitment.
The highly-touted recruit is a four-star running back who currently attends East St. Louis Senior High School in St. Clair County, Illinois. He rushed 126 times for 1,341 yards, scoring 20 touchdowns in 12 games as a junior.
After visiting the Coral Gables campus and facility twice, 247Sports’ Gaby Urrutia predicts the Hurricanes to land Johnson-Cook as he’s set to make an official announcement on Saturday, April 25, on Rivals. The other programs in the running are the Ole Miss Rebels, Auburn Tigers, Kentucky Wildcats, and LSU Tigers.
The run game played a major role in the Hurricanes’ run towards the National Championship game. Homegrown star Mark Fletcher Jr. led the charge by rushing 75 times for a College Football Playoff record-breaking 507 yards, scoring three total touchdowns in four games.
Johnson-Cook is listed at 6-3, 220 pounds, and ranked 47th nationally, fourth among running backs, and third in the state of Illinois for the 2027 recruiting class, according to 247SportsComposite. He received offers and interest from numerous programs, including the Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Alabama Crimson Tide, Oregon Ducks, Arkansas Razorbacks, Baylor Bears, Ohio State Buckeyes, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Georgia Bulldogs, Kansas State Wildcats, Oklahoma State Cowboys, TCU Horned Frogs, Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, and Texas Tech Red Raiders, along with several others.
The Hurricanes hired a new running backs coach in Favaian Upshaw during the offseason. Despite the minor personal change to the staff, retaining last year’s core gives him a significant start to develop within the team.
The program has a strong track record in high school recruiting in Illinois: defensive tackle Justin Scott, edge rusher Marquise Lightfoot, and four-star quarterback Israel Abrams, who is currently part of the 2027 group of commits.
If the Hurricanes manage to land Johnson-Cook’s commitment live on television, the future continues to shine brighter. Depending on what transpires in the next transfer portal window, it will likely determine how early he sees consistent playing time, if on the roster.
Outside of Fletcher Jr., CharMar Brown, Girard Pringle Jr., and Jordan Lyle have another year of NCAA eligibility.
Johnson-Cook’s decision could put the Hurricanes among the elite 2027 recruiting groups. The program will be on the lookout on Saturday, April 25.
