Duke transfer Darian Mensah, a proven ACC champion, is poised to dominate for the Miami Hurricanes and could be the top pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.

The Miami Hurricanes had a successful 2026 NFL Draft, with nine former players selected across the 257 picks, including three in the first round. Coming off a National Championship appearance, the program has several players who will be eligible to depart and reach the highest level of football the following year. As a new season approaches, they will have opportunities to shine and climb the boards.

In a “way-too-early” article published by Bleacher Report, Hurricanes quarterback Darian Mensah was predicted to be the first pick, going to the Miami Dolphins. Despite not having played an official game snap for the program yet, the 21-year-old is expected to make a jump in production, resulting in a high draft status.

“No quarterback in college football did more with less than Mensah,” Brent Sobleski wrote. “He was the engine that drove the Duke Blue Devils to becoming ACC champions last season. The 21-year-old signal caller blends an enticing skill set that translates well to the NFL. Mensah plays from the pocket with poise under pressure, accuracy and good ball placement at all three levels. He is a mobile quarterback but prefers to sit in the pocket and dissect defenses. Duke was one of the least talented teams among Power 4 programs, yet Mensah elevated the program with his play.”

Before transferring to Miami, the All-ACC quarterback completed 334 of 500 passes, 66.8 completion percentage, leading the Atlantic Coast Conference by throwing for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns, including six interceptions, in 14 games with the Blue Devils. He led the program to its first ACC Football Championship since 1989.

Mensah joins a Hurricanes roster that consists of significant talent at wide receiver and running back, including homegrown star sophomore Malachi Toney. He’s expected to lead one of the projected best offenses in the nation. If Mensah takes the program to another historic season, potentially returning to the National Championship game, being a first-round pick will likely become a reality.

The Dolphins underwent significant changes throughout the NFL offseason, including the release of Pro Bowl quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The organization replaced him with four-year veteran Malik Willis, who signed a three-year, $67.5 million contract, $22.25 million guaranteed, with a potential out in 2028. The 26-year-old isn’t expected to be a long-term solution for the franchise, nor is he surrounded by the talent to succeed.

The two-time Super Bowl-winning franchise is projected to finish with a top-10 pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. If and when Mensah has a successful individual season, he might not have to move so far away. Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning is the most popular prospect among the incoming class, but the new Hurricanes star could make a case to surpass him.
