Despite going undrafted, the productive Miami Hurricanes linebacker lands an NFL opportunity, aiming to prove doubters wrong with the Super Bowl winning Kansas City Chiefs.

The Miami Hurricanes developed significant defensive talents who were drafted to the NFL, such as Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Rueben Bain Jr. and Los Angeles Chargers’ Akheem Mesidor, both first-round selections. However, linebacker Wesley Bissainthe was not fortunate enough to get called upon within the 257 selections.

The Miami native will have an opportunity to prove doubters wrong after reportedly signing a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent.

Bissainthe spent all four collegiate seasons with the Miami Hurricanes, joining at the very beginning of coach Mario Cristobal’s current tenure. He was part of the 5-7 team, but stayed loyal to the program through thick and thin. The 21-year-old saw the light on the other side of the tunnel, helping the Hurricanes reach the National Championship for the first time in over two decades before officially departing.

The undrafted prospect was a four-star recruit coming from Miami Central High School, the same as Bain Jr. Bissainthe played as an outside and middle linebacker, recording 121 total tackles, 34 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, and six interceptions, including two pick-sixes. After receiving interest and offers from the Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Alabama Crimson Tide, Oregon Ducks, Louisville Cardinals, and Texas Longhorns, among others, he chose to stay close to home and committed to the Hurricanes on Dec. 4, 2021.

Bissanthe developed into a primary starter following a productive freshman season and improved each year. As a senior, he played in 625 total snaps and recorded 71 total tackles, 39 solos and 32 assists, three tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a pass defended, an interception against the Stanford Cardinal, and a sack in the Cotton Bowl quarterfinals against the Ohio State Buckeyes in a second-and-six situation in the fourth quarter.

The Miami native measured at 6-1 3/4, 225 pounds, 31 7/8 inch arms, and 9 3/4 inch hands at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. He’s viewed to have limited potential, but could gain experience on special teams to earn an expanded career.

The Chiefs could look to develop him into a rotation player, depending on what transpires in camps.

Bissainthe spent one season under Hurricanes defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Corey Hetherman, going on to make a significant increase in production.

A new challenge presents itself for him to make the Chiefs roster. The team already has nine linebackers currently under contract. Bissainthe’s path to the NFL could lead to another franchise, but the opportunity starts in Kansas City.
