Bill Belichick surged past SEC powerhouses to land standout playmaker Amare Patterson, signaling a talent shift in Chapel Hill as the North Carolina Tar Heels build a formidable future offense.

North Carolina: Bill Belichick Earns Huge Recruiting Win With 4-Star WRMore Videos

A big reason why North Carolina finished with a 4-8 record last year was because of the talent Bill Belichick had during his first season with the program.

Belichick had a roster better comprised of players to compete in the Group of 6 than in the ACC. UNC was much more aggressive in recruiting this offseason, so the talent level will be better in 2026.

However, the Tar Heels will face an uphill battle to make a bowl game due to a challenging schedule this fall.

UNC should be on the rise under Belichick, and the team landed a big-time offensive recruit for the future.

Per Hayes Fawcett of Rivals, four-star wide receiver Amare Patterson is committing to the Tar Heels. He chose UNC over ACC rival Georgia Tech and SEC programs South Carolina and Georgia.

"BREAKING: Four-Star WR Amare Patterson has Committed to North Carolina, he tells me for Rivals," Fawcett posted on X. "The 6’1 185 WR chose the Tar Heels over South Carolina, Georgia, and Georgia Tech."

Patterson plays football for Bluftton High School and is from Ridgeland, South Carolina.

Patterson is a huge win for Belichick, and also first-year offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino. Petrino has a history of creating elite offenses, and Patterson could be a big target for the offensive coordinator.

Patterson told Chad Simmons of Rivals that he chose UNC because of what Belichick's coaching staff is building.

“The brotherhood, the coaches and what they’ve got going on all were part of the decision," Patterson said.

Fans reacted to Patterson's commitment on social media.

"Yeah I’ll be honest this is not the move but I’m rooting for you," wrote a Georgia fan.

"WHATTTT now this is a shocker I thought it was gonna be South Carolina," posted another.

"Poor decision young man. It’s a sinking ship in Chapel Hill," argued a fan.

"Kirby stuffed by chapel bill," wrote another.

Per 247 Sports, Patterson is currently UNC's highest-ranked commit for 2027. UNC has a commitment from three-star receiver Anthony Williams. North Carolina currently has the No. 44 recruiting class for 2027.
