David Braun and Northwestern are continuing to add to its defensive ranks this offseason.
Yesterday, former Sacred Heart defensive tackle Glory Stephen-Wangboje announced his commitment to Northwestern via a post to X. Stephen-Wangboje was a three-star recruit as a transfer, according to 247Sports.
At Sacred Heart, the 293 lbs lineman played three seasons from 2023 to 2025. As a freshman, he appeared in just three games and didn't record any stats, but he's slowly worked his way up the totem pole since then.
In 2024, Stephen-Wangboje finished the year with 11 total tackles in seven games played. Then, in 2025, he ramped things up again, finishing with 23 total tackles and a sack while playing in all 12 games. He also had a couple passes defended this year.
For Northwestern, Stephen-Wangboje is far from a sure thing, but he's a solid player who could benefit from working with this staff. At the end of the day, though, this is a player whose first real production came this season at a lower level of college football.
With the 'Cats, he's going to have to battle for playing time, but it's always good to have reinforcements in the trenches you can rely on. Northwestern has dealt with some injuries in recent seasons, and it's learned that depth is key.
Stephen-Wangboje also has two seasons of eligibility remaining, which makes him more interesting for a place like Northwestern. He may not start this year or see much playing time, but Braun and his staff now have a full two seasons to mold him into a positive player.
For Stephen-Wangboje, this is a bet on yourself move. He didn't show quite enough with Sacred Heart to be a premier name in the portal, but he entered it anyway. Not only did he enter it, he chose to come to a Big Ten school to try to elevate his game.
He could have gone to another smaller school in search of more playing time, something a lot of players probably would have done in his situation. Instead, he's headed to Evanston where the competition will be fierce.
Braun has made a lot of changes to his offensive staff, bringing in Chip Kelly to be the offensive coordinator and revamping the position coaches underneath him. But he's spent a lot of resources in the portal ensuring that his defense remains a strength of the team.
Adding Stephen-Wangboje doesn't move the needle a ton for next season, but he does represent a continued commitment to developing talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
