Northwestern is off to a 3-0 start this college basketball season, and its rotation is as deep as ever. This year, head coach Chris Collins welcomed his highest ever ranked recruiting class to campus. Multiple freshmen have made an impact so far -- guys like Tyler Kropp and Jake West are squarely in the rotation as of now -- but perhaps the player to be most excited about is Tre Singleton.
Singleton was the highest ranked recruit of the bunch, and he's had an up-and-down start to his season. The forward is struggling most obviously from the foul line, where he's currently shooting just 54.5%. He's averaging 7.7 points per game on the young season.
It hasn't been a perfect start to his career, but Singleton is adjusting, and he hasn't made the mistakes you'd typically see out of a young player. He isn't hoisting up dumb shots to play hero ball. And he isn't turning the ball over to the other team.
It feels like he's bound to break out at some point. The athleticism and size are apparent. His nose for the basket when he's around the rim is obvious. Against Cleveland State, he scored 15 points, his career high.
"Tre's a really good player," Collins said after that game. "The second half, he rattled two free throws out. It was almost like he was snake bitten a little bit. He missed two free throws; he got a couple tough fouls. The game was going against him and I just said 'stay aggressive.'"
The freshman responded, turning up his game to become one of five Wildcats to finish with 15+ points against the Vikings.
Tonight, Singleton will be back in action again taking on DePaul in his first road contest as a college player. The 'Cats could use more of his second half performance across town.
He's likely going to start again, which he's done in all three games to begin the season. Collins clearly has a lot of confidence in the young player, and he's letting him work through his adjustment period to college basketball.
"He's a big, strong guy. He's skilled," Collins said. "He can pass. The more he plays and the more he settles down, I think we're going to continue to see what kind of impact he can have on the game."
After DePaul, though, Singleton is really going to be tested. Matchups against teams like UVA, South Carolina and Oklahoma State will be tough, and they're the next three games on the schedule after tonight.
