Embracing a brutal 2026 slate, Venables leans on fifteen returning starters and a playoff-tested culture to silence doubters as the Sooners prepare for the SEC’s unforgiving gauntlet
Brent Venables joined SEC Network on Wednesday after the release of more 2026 game windows and start times, and you could tell he’s excited about what’s ahead for the Sooners.
The schedule is brutal, as expected in this league, but Venables didn’t sound worried. He sounded motivated.
“In a league where there’s not a whole lot of room for error, it puts one more on top of a lot of other challenging venues, whether it’s home or away,” Venables said.
“The challenge of what's in front of us in the SEC and in what we have in our non-conference… our guys are really looking forward to it. It’s incredibly exciting.”
That’s the mindset you want from your head coach. No complaining about the tough slate. No excuses. Just excitement about the opportunity in front of them.
Venables continued: “For us, I think it gives our guys a lot of motivation, a lot of juice, a lot of excitement, and a lot to look forward to throughout the course of the summer. I think we play our first Power Four opponent at home sometime in late October.”
“It’s a great, great challenge for our guys, but it’s something that we’re, without question, looking forward to.”
This program has been through some growing pains the last few years, but you can feel the belief building. They made the playoff last season and now return a ton of production.
That experience matters.
Venables also hit on the mental side of things: “I think for our guys, as much as anything, it doesn’t matter what everybody else thinks or says or what their opinions are. It’s about what we do, taking care of business — we control the controllables. With the returning experience we have that was a part of that… it's only unthinkable if we don’t think it."
“You have to start over, it’s a new team, it’s certainly a new DNA. But a lot of that experience — we have 15 starters back — those guys will be able to lean on those moments as we build this year’s team.”
This is important.
A lot of national media is still sleeping on Oklahoma or picking them to take a step back. Venables is using that as fuel while also reminding his players that last year’s success gives them something to build on.
They don’t have to prove they belong anymore, they proved that by making the playoff. Now it’s about taking the next step.
The schedule is no joke.
Nine SEC games plus a tough non-con that includes a road trip to Michigan early. But having most of the big SEC games with flexible windows gives OU a chance to play in some primetime spots if they handle their business.
The Red River game at 2:30 p.m. on ABC/ESPN should be a great atmosphere too.
Venables is not shying away from it, he’s embracing it. That’s the kind of mentality you need if you want to compete at the top of the SEC.
With 14 starters back, John Mateer entering his second year in the system, and what should be another elite defense, the pieces are there.
This feels like a big year for the program. The expectations are rising in Norman, and Venables seems to welcome that pressure.
He knows the standard at Oklahoma. He knows what the fans expect. And from the sound of his comments, his players are locked in and ready for whatever the schedule throws at them.
The schedule release is just another reminder that nothing is going to be easy in 2026. But that’s also what makes it exciting.
If OU can navigate the tough non-con early and stack wins in the SEC, they’ll have a real chance to make another playoff run and push for bigger things.
