Oddsmakers project a rocky road for Brent Venables' squad, labeling the Sooners underdogs in half of their marquee matchups against top-tier SEC and Big Ten opponents
DraftKings dropped early odds for several of Oklahoma’s 2026 games, and they make for interesting reading.
The Sooners are only favored in three of the six games with lines out so far, which tells you the betting market expects Brent Venables’ team to take at least three losses this season.
That’s not exactly the vibe most OU fans want to see heading into the year.
Here’s where things stand right now:
- vs UTEP: OU -40.5 (Heavy Favorite)
- at Michigan: OU +2.5 (Underdog)
- at Georgia: OU +10 (Underdog)
- vs Texas (in Dallas): OU +6 (Underdog)
- vs Ole Miss: OU -4 (Favorite)
- vs Texas A&M: OU -2.5 (Favorite)
Being favored in just half of these feels a little low for a program that made the playoff last year.
The only three-loss teams to make it so far were Clemson in 2024 (who won their conference) and Alabama in 2025 (who got an at-large after losing the SEC title game).
That’s a very narrow path. I think the oddsmakers are off on a couple of these.
The Michigan line stands out as one I really don’t like. OU +2.5 on the road? Come on. Oklahoma beat Michigan by double digits last year in Norman, and this year’s team looks better on paper.
I’m not sold on Bryce Underwood at quarterback just yet for the Wolverines. I’d probably take OU to win that game outright.
The Georgia line at +10 also feels high. Yes, it’s in Athens and Georgia is always tough at home, but OU went undefeated in true road games last season.
They picked up impressive wins at Alabama and Tennessee. The Sooners have shown they can play well on the road. Ten points feels like too much respect for Georgia and not enough for what Venables has built.
The Texas game being OU +6 is understandable even if it stings. The teams look pretty even on talent, and both have questions along the offensive line. But Oklahoma hasn’t scored a touchdown against Texas in the last two Red River games, and Venables is just 1-3 all-time against the Longhorns.
The market is being cautious, and fairly so.
On the positive side, being favored at home against Ole Miss and Texas A&M shows some respect for how this roster has improved. Those are winnable games that OU needs to take care of if they want to make noise in November.
Overall, these early lines suggest the national betting public still isn’t fully bought into Oklahoma as a consistent top-tier SEC contender.
They see the talent and the defense, but they’re waiting for more consistency and better results against the big boys.
If Mateer stays healthy, the offensive line takes a step, and this defense continues to be elite, I think OU can beat more of these lines than the oddsmakers expect.
The Michigan and Georgia games in particular feel like spots where the Sooners can surprise people.
We’re still a long way from kickoff, and lines will move a lot between now and September. But these early numbers give us a good idea of how the rest of the country views this team right now.
