The Oregon Ducks and head coach Dan Lanning recently received an exciting update regarding one of the program's top targets in the 2027 recruiting class.
As the Oregon Ducks and head coach Dan Lanning continue to prepare for the 2026 college football season, the coaching staff has made great progress this offseason within the upcoming recruiting cycle.
So far this offseason, the Ducks have managed to land a total of six commitments in the 2027 recruiting class, including a pair of four-star prospects in EDGE Rashad Streets and defensive lineman Zane Rowe. However, this is far from the end of the program’s prolific run on the recruiting trail.
One name that has begun to gain traction this offseason is 2027 four-star safety Semaj Stanford, who is on the verge of announcing his commitment. On Saturday, Stanford took to social media to provide an update on his recruitment journey, stating that he will announce his commitment later this month on April 23.
Stanford’s Prospect Profile
Jenks' Kaydin Jones (2) celebrates his touchdown with Semaj Stanford next to Norman North's Reece Crandal during the high school football game between Norman North and Jenks at Harve Collins Field in Norman, Okla., Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023.Stanford has quickly become one of the hottest defensive backs in the 2027 recruiting class, as he is the No. 4-ranked prospect in the state of Oklahoma and the No. 8 safety in the current recruiting cycle, according to 247Sports’ Composite.
Standing at 5-foot-11, 180 lbs., Stanford may not possess the ideal frame for a safety at the college level. However, the blossoming prospect proved to be a dynamic weapon on defense during his junior season at Broken Arrow High School, as he finished with 80 tackles, 5 pass breakups, and one interception. His strong athleticism, paired with a surprising amount of strength, makes him a key prospect for the Ducks this offseason.
Unfortunately for Lanning and the program, the Ducks must compete against the likes of the Georgia Bulldogs and the Texas Longhorns in order to land Stanford. Despite both schools being late to make their run for talented safety, the Bulldogs and the Longhorns have a rich track record of producing high-level defensive backs at the NFL level, making for tough competition for Oregon.
Looking at the entire 2027 class for the Ducks, Stanford would become the first safety commit for the program and the fifth defensive player to join the group. If he ultimately decides to further his football career with Oregon, Stanford would be an excellent defensive back for Lanning’s defense in the near future.
