As the Mustangs battle Texas powerhouses for four-star phenom Landen Williams-Callis, Rhett Lashlee’s staff looks to secure a cornerstone playmaker for their move into the ACC.
SMU continues to make a strong push for one of the nation's premier running backs in the 2027 recruiting class, and the Mustangs aren't backing down despite fierce competition from several powerhouse programs.

The star's top 10 schools include a lot of powerhouse programs, including some Texas teams like the Longhorns, Texas A&M, Houston, and SMU.
Williams-Callis has been one of the most productive high school players in the nation. During his junior season, he rushed for an incredible 3,502 yards and 59 touchdowns while averaging 10.8 yards per carry. His combination of speed, vision, and big-play ability has made him one of the highest-rated running backs in the 2027 cycle.
Landing a player of his caliber won't be easy.
While many recruiting analysts view the Longhorns as one of the favorites entering the final stages of his recruitment, SMU has continued to position itself as a legitimate contender.
That says plenty about where the Mustangs stand as a program.
Since Rhett Lashlee took over as head coach, SMU has steadily elevated its recruiting profile, and the program's move into the ACC has only increased its appeal to elite prospects looking to compete at the highest level while staying close to home.
Williams-Callis also fits exactly the type of explosive playmaker Lashlee's offense is designed to feature. His ability to break long runs, contribute as a receiver, and create explosive plays in space would make him an ideal centerpiece in SMU's offense.
While there is still no official commitment date, the recruitment appears to be entering a critical phase. Every visit, conversation and relationship could prove pivotal as the nation's top programs battle for one of Texas' biggest stars.
Whether SMU ultimately lands Williams-Callis remains to be seen, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the Mustangs are refusing to simply play the role of underdog. They're going all-in for one of the nation's best running backs and are making sure they're in the conversation until the very end.
