SMU men’s tennis dropped a 4-3 ACC thriller to Miami as Trevor Svajda, Georgi Georgiev and Krish Arora delivered key singles wins.
DALLAS - SMU men’s tennis came painfully close to stealing a huge ACC win Friday, but Miami escaped Dallas with a 4-3 victory after a brutal final-match finish at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
For the Mustangs, this one will sting because they had plenty of answers, just not quite enough at the very end.
The biggest storyline for SMU men’s tennis was once again Trevor Svajda, who continues to look like one of the hottest players in college tennis.
Svajda picked up his seventh-ranked win of the spring by taking down No. 113 Antonio Prat in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(13), and pushed his singles record to 16-1. He’s now won seven straight matches and has already matched his single-season career high in victories.
Georgi Georgiev also delivered another strong performance, both in doubles and singles. He teamed with Vikas Deo for a 6-3 win at Court 3, improving the duo to 9-2 this season, then added a gritty three-set singles win to move to 13-3 on the year.
Krish Arora chipped in with another clutch point as well, grinding out his 10th singles victory of the season to pull the Mustangs even at 3-3.
That set the stage for pure drama.
With the match hanging on court four, Jerry Barton battled deep into a third set before falling in a tiebreak, allowing Miami to seal the deciding point. That’s the difference in a match this tight. A swing here, a point there, and the entire day flips.
Even in the loss, SMU showed plenty to like. The Mustangs split singles 3-3, competed across the board, and proved they can trade punches in ACC play.
Now sitting at 14-8 overall and 4-3 in conference action, SMU gets no time to sulk with No. 47 Florida State coming to town Sunday.
