No. 31 SMU men’s tennis is heading into the ACC Championship with plenty of momentum after a convincing 4-0 win over Boston College on Saturday in Dallas.
The Mustangs handled business quickly at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex, taking the doubles point and then closing out three singles matches in straight sets to finish off the shutout.
The victory pushed SMU to 8-5 in ACC play, good for a tie for sixth place in the conference standings and enough to lock up a first-round bye in the ACC Championship.
For a team looking to build postseason confidence, this was exactly the kind of performance it needed.
SMU set the tone early in doubles. Trevor Svajda and Jerry Barton wasted no time on court one, rolling to a 6-0 win for their 12th doubles victory of the season.
The Mustangs then grabbed the point on court three, where Meethre Barot and Alex Finkelstein came through with a win in their first match together as a pairing.
In singles, Svajda once again led the charge. The nationally ranked standout earned his 21st win of the spring and 32nd overall victory this season with a straight-set decision at the top spot.
That total moved him into third place on SMU’s all-time single-season singles wins list, another milestone in an already outstanding year.
Georgi Georgiev added to the lead with a strong win on court three, improving his spring singles record to 16-4. Jerry Barton then sealed the team victory on court four, moving his spring mark to 17-6.
Even beyond the final score, SMU looked sharp across the lineup, with multiple unfinished matches also leaning in the Mustangs’ favor when play stopped.
Now the focus shifts to Cary, North Carolina, where SMU will wait to learn its path in the ACC Championship bracket. With a bye secured and the lineup clicking, the Mustangs are arriving at the right time.
