SMU men’s tennis draws Florida in the 2027 ITA Kickoff Weekend, with Oklahoma and Arizona State waiting in a loaded Norman Regional.
SMU men’s tennis won’t get a soft landing in its return to ITA Kickoff Weekend competition.
The Mustangs, seeded No. 29 overall, are headed to Norman, Oklahoma, for the 2027 ITA Kickoff Weekend on Jan. 23-24, where they’ll open against No. 22 Florida in one of the more intriguing early-season matchups on the national tennis calendar.
It’s a tough draw. It’s also exactly the kind of stage SMU should want.
After earning automatic bids as a host for the ITA National Indoor Championship in each of the last two seasons, SMU now has to fight its way back through the bracket.
The reward is massive. The winner of each regional site advances to the 2027 ITA Men’s National Indoor Championship, hosted by Clemson and South Carolina.
SMU’s path starts with Florida, but the rest of the Norman Regional is just as nasty. No. 9 Oklahoma headlines the site as the host and will face No. 32 Arizona State in the other opening match.
If the Mustangs beat the Gators, they’ll meet the Oklahoma-Arizona State winner on Jan. 24 with a national indoor berth on the line.
Even with a loss, SMU is guaranteed two matches because the opening-round losers will play in a consolation match. But let’s be honest: this trip is about much more than getting reps.
For SMU, this is a measuring-stick weekend.
The Mustangs are stepping into a four-team regional loaded with ranked programs, national ambition and zero easy outs. Florida brings SEC credibility.
Oklahoma has the home-court advantage and a top-10 seed. Arizona State gives the bracket another dangerous team capable of wrecking plans.
If SMU wants to prove it belongs among the country’s top programs in 2027, Norman gives the Mustangs the perfect chance to make noise early.
