The Syracuse University men's basketball suffered a second straight disappointing loss on Wednesday night, falling 76-74 against Virginia Tech at the JMA Wireless Dome.
The Orange have now lost back-to-back games after being favored and are just 3-3 inside Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. Syracuse hasn't been to the NCAA Tournament since 2020-21 and each loss like this impacts the ability to get there this season.
The Orange led by as many as nine points in the first half but then ended up trailing by 10 in the second half. They had chances late to tie the game, but missed a three-pointer at 72-69 with 21 seconds left and failed to secure a rebound that would have given them another possession while down 74-71 with six seconds left.
Rich Barnes-Imagn ImagesAfter the game, the frustration showed through for head coach Adrian Autry:
The second half: nine turnovers, turn the ball over for whatever reason, don't understand. And when they gave us a chance, the inability to get the rebounds, important rebounds, the stretch to give us a chance again I just thought that was a difference going back and forth.
But the turnovers and our inability to get the rebounds when we needed it, they gave us a chance to. We got a clean look to tie it up. That's all you can ask for. Then we get another chance and we walk under the (expletive) basketball, under the rim, and we don't get the rebound to give us another chance.
So those are the things that I would sum up the second half. And that was the game.
One additional frustration in this loss was the lack of ball movement for the Orange. While the first half looked relatively crisp offensively, the second half was a different story. The Orange had just one assist in the first 10 minutes of the second half, with the offense grinding to a half and playing a lot of isolation ball.
The Orange will be back home on Saturday afternoon (2 p.m. ET) against the University of Miami. Our own Tom Goslowski will be there and will have coverage live. You can follow him on social media @TomGozz and you can interact with him in our free community section.
After much talk in early December, it's beginning to look like famous rapper Toosii will not play for SU football in 2026. It's not definite, but head coach Fran Brown has doubts.
