It had already been reported for weeks, but on Saturday night, it became official: Syracuse University football transfer portal addition Dillan Fontus announced his commitment to the Orange.
A defensive lineman, Fontus previously played at Maryland and he'll come to SU with one year of eligibility remaining. Durable, he's played in 12 games each of the last three seasons. The 2025 campaign was by far his most impactful, as he registered 14 solo tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss. He also had 2.0 sacks and a pass deflection, difficult feats for a defensive tackle to achieve.
Syracuse went 3-9 in 2025, losing the final eight games of the season in the wake of a season-ending injury to quarterback Steve Angeli. However, with Angeli back in the fold, the team figures to be much better in 2026. They were 3-1 before he got hurt.
Beyond him, SU has brought in an interesting crop of transfers, a lot of which have significant playing experience. Head coach Fran Brown also brought in multiple quarterbacks with significant experience, ensuring the program isn't left without a quarterback option in the wake of another injury.
Furthermore, SU hired defensive coordinator Vince Kehres, who helped build a top-rated defense at Toledo, which gives optimism for growth on that side of the ball.
