One day after landing Gavin Doty in the transfer portal, McNamara has brought in another of his former players.
On Tuesday, the Syracuse men's basketball team nabbed coveted Siena transfer Gavin Doty out of the transfer portal.
Doty, who averaged more than 18 ppg this past season and led Siena to the NCAA Tournament, will reunite with Gerry McNamara, who is now the head coach at Syracuse.
However, Doty isn't the only former Saint coming to Central New York: On Instagram, junior forward Tasman Goodrick announced he is coming to join the duo as well.
Goodrick has played just 18 career games between Cal Baptist and Siena, but he started nine this past season before getting hurt. At 6'10, he averaged 9.7 ppg and 7.3 rebounds. He's a native of Australia.
Why he and Doty are important adds
Certainly, they are good players. That matters most, but they also have the understanding of what McNamara is trying to build. They have seen it and been part of it. They know his culture, his language, his mindset and they can help lay the groundwork for the rest of the program as McNamara builds it.
Where Syracuse is at right now
At this very moment? The roster is in tatters, meaning that McNamara has his work cut out for him.
Starting guard JJ Starling and starting center William Kyle III are graduating, so they are gone. Point guard Naithan George is in the transfer portal as is superstar Donnie Freeman. So are role players Tyler Betsey, Aaron Womack and Akir Souare.
At this time, Kiyan Anthony is the only sure thing to return to the roster, in addition to Doty and Goodrich coming in. The team will likely work to retain athletic rising sophomore Sadiq White Jr. and there's a chance that senior Nate Kingz will gain another year of eligibility, but that's unclear at this time.
With Kyle gone, the Orange are in need of a starting center. Perhaps that's a role that Goodrick can fill.

--With the 2025-26 season behind us, the oddsmakers have released their feelings for the next season already. Of course, until rosters are filled out, it's a futile exercise, but it's still interesting to see what people think about Syracuse and McNamara at this time.
