Sophie Burrows announced her intention to hit the transfer portal earlier this week.

Now-former Syracuse women's basketball standout Sophie Burrows has committed to play at the University of North Carolina next season.

Dushawn London of On3 had the information on social media on Saturday. Burrows entered the transfer portal when it opened last week. We had gotten no inclination that she was unhappy at Syracuse or looking for another school, but such is the nature of college athletics in 2026.

She's not the only one who is leaving the Orange, with Maddie Potts and multiple others also entering the portal. Syracuse has already gotten to work on replacing these players, hosting multiple transfer portal candidates themselves this weekend.

About Burrows

A rising senior, Burrows will have one season left of eligibility in Chapel Hill. The Australia native has appeared in 92 games over three seasons with Syracuse, starting in 65 of them. She averaged 12.2 ppg as a sophomore and 11.0 ppg this past season. She pulled down nearly six rebounds a game and averaged 1.9 steals. She's a career 37.6 percent shooter from the floor.

About Syracuse women's basketball

It's disheartening to see so many players leave the program considering how good the Orange were this season. Syracuse finished in a three-way tie for fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference and earned a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Orange won a game in that tournament before falling to top-seeded Connecticut in the Round of 32.

--Speaking of the transfer portal, it's spinning for the Syracuse men's basketball team as well. The Orange are set to lose several key players off last year's roster, including Donnie Freeman, Naithan George and Tyler Betsey. At this point, Syracuse has secured three players from the portal, including Fulton, N.Y. native Gavin Doty. Syracuse also just landed a transfer guard from McNeese State, who our own Tom Goslowski wrote about.

--The Syracuse football team, coming off a 3-9 season in 2025, took the field for the first time in 2026 on Saturday night for the annual spring football game. Goslowski was there and wrote his takeaways from the contest, although it's hard to fully gauge where the Orange are at right now because projected starting quarterback Steve Angeli didn't play. Neither did six top defensive players, including standout DB Demetres Samuel Jr.

--The Orange men and women's lacrosse teams, both nationally ranked, won key games on Saturday as well, beating Notre Dame and Virginia, respectively.
