Juan Castillo will be staying with the program after just getting hired.
The Syracuse University football program got some good news on Saturday morning as the New York Giants announced they are hiring Mike Bloomgren as their next offensive line coach.
Per Jordan Raanan of ESPN:
Giants are hiring Mike Bloomgren as their offensive line coach, per source. He was in same role last season with Browns.
Important hire. Bloomgren a Bill Callahan disciple, dating back to their time with Jets. Bloomgren spent a lot of time as college coach.
That's good for Syracuse because SU offensive line coach Juan Castillo was in the running for that job. Just hired this offseason by head coach Fran Brown, Castillo became a candidate for the Giants because he coached in Baltimore with new Giants head coach John Harbaugh.
The Castillo file
Castillo played his college football at Texas A&M-Kingsville and also coached there on two separate occasions. Since departing his alma mater before the 1995 season, he's been with the Philadelphia Eagles (offensive assistant, tight ends coach, offensive line coach, defensive coordinator), Ravens (run game coordinator, offensive line coach), Buffalo Bills (same roles), Michigan (offensive analyst), Chicago Bears (offensive line coach), Washington Commanders (tight ends coach, run game coordinator), UCLA and Michigan again.
Castillo is 72 years old, so it's unclear how much longer he'll want to coach, but he's an important hire heading into the 2026 season as the Orange look to improve from a disappointing 3-9 in 2025.
Additional coaches for 2026
The Orange have worked hard to bring on a new group of coaches for 2026. In addition to Castillo, the team hired Vince Kehres as its defensive coordinator and Super Bowl winning quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan.
They announced a handful of coaching decisions on Friday as well.
