The Syracuse University men's basketball team earned a much-needed win on Saturday night by beating Notre Dame at the JMA Wireless Dome.
The 86-72 win moves SU to 13-9 on the season and 4-5 within league play. Notre Dame is now 11-11 and just 2-7.
Searching for answers amid a four-game losing streak, head coach Adrian Autry changed up his starting lineup by sending top scorer Donnie Freeman to the bench and inserting true freshman Sadiq White Jr.
Freeman scored just seven points in a muted 22 minutes while White scored five points in 19 minutes. He also added six rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal. He had three offensive rebounds and earned the praise of Autry after the contest.
Yeah, I thought Sadiq gave us a real big boost, energy-wise, especially. Notre Dame has a lot of skilled guys. We were able to really stretch our defense and I thought he did a really good job of setting screens, and he can talk. I thought he communicated really well for the rest of the guys when we were in coverages. And he got to the glass. You know, that’s the one thing that I’ve always challenged him on, is getting to the glass. I thought he did that really well. Six rebounds.
But, you know, Sadiq, he’s just one of those guys that his energy is infectious. Right? You feel him and the way he communicates and he uplifts guys. And I thought he did a really, really good job tonight.
White started several games earlier this season when Freeman was out with a foot injury, but his minutes have dipped in conference play as Freeman returned to the lineup. These 19 minutes played represent his most in league play. The five points are his third-highest total in the league as well.
There's no guarantee that Autry sticks with this lineup and rotation moving forward, but it worked for at least one night. The Orange are back in action against No. 16 North Carolina on Monday night in a quick turnaround.
--The Orange honored the life of all-time leading scorer Lawrence Moten at halftime. He passed away before the start of this season, and you can see what former head coach Jim Boeheim had to say during the ceremony here.
--The No. 2/3 Syracuse men's lacrosse team will open its season on Sunday afternoon (1 p.m. ET) at home against No. 16/17 Boston University.
