Syracuse University officially missed out on another coaching candidate on Sunday morning, with reports circulating that South Florida coach Bryan Hodgson is accepting the vacant coaching position at Providence.
Pete Thamel of ESPN had the information on social media. Hodgson just led South Florida to the NCAA Tournament, where they were beaten by Louisville in the Round of 64.
Providence fired head coach Kim English at the conclusion of a disappointing season inside the Big East.
If you've been following the Syracuse search closely, this isn't particularly surprising, but let's run down the timeline of what's transpired since SU ended its season at 15-17 overall.
1) A day after losing to SMU in the first round of the ACC Tournament, Syracuse fired head coach Adrian Autry. He went 49-48 in three seasons and never made the NCAA Tournament.
2) Almost immediately, we got a list of six candidates for the job. Hodgson was one of those six, though he was also linked to the Providence position.
3) Jeff Goodman of the Field of 68 said he felt that Providence was in the driver's seat for Hodgson, with SU lagging behind.
"Both Syracuse and Providence want Bryan Hodgson.... I think Providence probably has the lead because they've got more money right now. They've got more NIL, they've got more resources...They are going to have probably upwards of $10 million again, they had $10.5 million this year, in Kim English's final year, where Syracuse is probably looking more in the $8 million range. You take that job, you have higher expectations at Syracuse..."
4) Then a report came out that said Hodgson had declined the Syracuse job.
5) However, there was some pushback to that notion. Speaking with the media this week, new Syracuse AD Bryan Blair said that no candidates had rejected an offer, which caused our own Tom Goslowski to wonder if Syracuse ever actually made an offer, or if SU was just used for leverage by Hodgson's camp.
Either way, Hodgson has taken the Providence job and Syracuse is left looking for a new man. Might Gerry McNamara be the next up?
South Florida Bulls head coach Bryan Hodgson watches his team during a practice session ahead of the first round of the men's 2026 NCAA Tournament at KeyBank Center. Mark Konezny-Imagn ImagesAn Olean, N.Y., native, Hodgson was only the head coach at USF for one season. However, the 38-year-old has been coaching college hoops for 18 years. Prior to this season's success with South Florida, he coached for two years at Arkansas State, winning the Sun Belt regular season title in 2024-25.
Before Arkansas State, he was an assistant coach with both Alabama and Buffalo, working under Nate Oats. He helped Buffalo get to the NCAA Tournament three times, just as he did Alabama.
He started his career at Division III Fredonia State, just outside of Buffalo.
Because of his New York roots and his understanding of the local fanbase/market, he was a logical candidate at SU.
